I Turned Down the Ability to Earn $50 USD Today. I Peek into the California Economy

Hello Hive Community,

Once upon a time, I was desperately grabbing every penny I could, so that I could move out of my husbands home in Northern California, and get myself a Southern California Apartment.

(I was successful )

During that time, I did many different odd jobs to save up for the deposit and first months rent, which at the time was $3300 USD.

One of those gigs was taking pregnancy tests. The gig consists of driving to a laboratory, taking a pregnancy, answering some questions about said test, and then collecting $50 USD.

Last week, they called me back to see if I would participate again.

I immediately agreed

$50 bucks to pee on a stick? Yes please.

However, today, as I was getting ready to drive there, I realized that it was just not a cost - effective trip.

The following are the reasons why I turned down the gig

  1. The Laboratory is 24 miles away. My car gets 19 miles to the gallon, and gas near my home is 4.29USD Per Gallon.

  2. Although the test itself only takes 30 - 45 minutes, the drive there takes 33 mins according to google.

  3. My usually happy to watch my kids babysitter (aka my mom) asked me to buy some Pizza for the kids when I came back so that she didn't have to cook.

I realized this was not cost effective

I was going to make $50 USD, and spend $8.60 on gas

I was going to drive 66 minutes to the lab, plus another 24 minutes to and from my mom's house and then spend another 30- 45 minutes at the lab. - so about two hours

I was going to have to spend AT LEAST $15 USD on Pizza, pluse whatever time it took me to pick it up. Or I could go with the $36.73 price tag to have it delivered.

I decided to stay home and blog about it instead ... and logged on for some tarot readings.

I figure I can stay home - log online for 2 hours and see if I can get some hits for Tarot Readings.

I pretty much have learned that my "good" times to log on are 8pm - midnight. But sitting here for 2 hours will probably make me more income than driving around getting to a gig since Tarot Reading usually pays me at least $25 an hour (and there is enough down time for me to be able to blog this post)

Plus, I can save my babysitting favor for next time.

I really hope I don't regret it later ... I just moved again, and things seem to add up every time I move.
