Is it silver test, a quick way to check coins or bars

I have created a video to show how to test a coin to check if it is silver or just silver plated copper, all you need is a set of scales, glass of water and a piece of cotton or dental floss.

To start you make a noose for your coin so the coin can be suspended, then the coin is weighed on the scales, a glass of water is placed on the scales and reset so it reads 0, then the coin is dangled in the water without touching the bottom or sides and then the dry weight is divided by the wet weight. This gives you the specific gravity of the metal you are testing.

Copper is 8.96 Sterling silver is 10.36

This is not fool proof but is hard to beat if done correctly, as always a magnet test is the first port of call but this is a non destructive test but beware doing this with proof coins as fingerprints and watermarks can be left afterwards.
