How much is your health worth? Or your time? Your sanity?

If you could trade them all in for a little extra money and a larger house. Would you do it?

Would you work more hours, move up the corporate ladder and take on a huge mortgage just to have a bigger house?

I sure as hell wouldn't.

And yet people do it every day.

They kill themselves working just to have a bigger house and a newer car. They put so much of themselves into the job that there is nothing left for the other parts of their lives. That all important work life balance.

We have a couple of friends that are planning to sell up and move out of the capital. They are going to move back home and while they could take the money from selling a small house in the capital which is worth a lot of money and buying a better house down the county. A much nicer house could be bought for less money than the old house. They could pay off a portion of their mortgage and give themselves a bit of comfort for the next few years which will be busy.

Instead they are going to take that money and go for a mansion down the country for even more money than their old house.

They are going to take on more debt, more pressure, more work and less time for a house that they don't even need.

Their mortgage is going to go up. The cost of running it will go up. Their expenses will go up.

The only thing that will go down is their spare time.

This is not a huge issues for now as they are recently married and have no kids but that will most likely change in the next few years.

What happens when the combined salary goes down? When you are minding sick kids? When you need to be around more during the week? When you add daycare costs to the bill to keep working?

The money is going to go down at some stage and the expense swill only go upwards.

All for a house that you don't even need.

It's not worth putting yourself under huge financial strain for things that you don't really need.

Keep it simple, keep within your means and keep your costs down.

You might not be keeping up with the Jones's but you will have a far better quality of life than the people trying to pretend that they are doing well.
