Having a plan is vital.

I took some very adult steps this week. Ones that had been on my list for a very long time.

Making a will.

Something simple but so important for the future.

Now, I'm relatively young and fairly fit so aside from all of the alcohol over the years I would hope to last for a long time to come but in this case it's better to be prepared since it will be too late if a will is needed.

It's not one of those deadlines where you can just pay a fine and put in the paperwork afterwards. It's fairly important to have it done before you actually need it.

You do not have to make a will. If you die without making a will, your estate will be distributed according to the law on succession. This means that your estate will be distributed between your surviving family members in the way that is set out in law.

No i for one don't want the government deciding where my assets will go when the time comes.

I don't want it going through the courts and solicitors making a profit from it.

I especially don't want it going to the wrong people.

It didn't really matter a few years ago until I bought a house and now with kids but since then it has become so important to put these choices down on paper.

Now that there is a full family here with some assets it was time to finally do something about it and get the paperwork together.

Doing it properly.

When your putting plans in place you have two options.

Do it yourself. Hire somebody that knows what they are doing.

It depends on the time, effort and skill level required but most times I would rather do some research and take a little bit longer to do it myself.

One, it's cheaper and two, you can learn something while you do it.

You can actually make your own will and there are lots of templates on the internet that will help you to put it on paper but sometimes it's worth getting in the professionals. Either way you will need two neutral parties to sign the will and make it legal.

Since we had a few complications between myself and my partner it was easier to get it done right and get a little advise from the people who know their stuff.

The first thing that we were told is that the sooner we made the will, the better.

With kids, property and money it can get very messy if anything was to happen with either one of us and having the wills made was a very smart thing to do. It only cost €100 for the two wills and well worth it for the legal advice alone.

Don't worry. I kept my crypto off the paper. It has a separate security protocol in case I go missing suspiciously.

On the other hand, if my partner goes missing form now on, then...... JK. They would know it was me.

But it is a great relief to have something this important marked off the list.

We have a lot of big plans for the next few years and it's important to have some security and back up on both sides. That goes for every part of life and especially with crypto it's important to have your passwords and access backed up somewhere safe.
