I remember that some years ago a friend of mine told me about how well she was doing as a "consultant" of a famous multilevel company dedicated to nutrition; she told me about the juicy income she received selling the well-known shakes of this brand and she showed me pictures of her 'clients-sellers' who looked very slim and happy consuming those magic potions that they claim come from vegetable origin.

Of course, before such testimony I was obviously interested in knowing what this business is all about, how I can get into it and how much money I could get with these sales, to which he immediately invited me to the famous meetings they usually organize to attract 'unsuspecting', sorry, investors. I attended the event, the first thing I felt was that I was in the middle of a religious cult, songs, applauses and praises to the founder of the company, even some tears flowed from many eyes. Certainly that was quite a show, no doubt about it.

After the show comes the explanation of how they will make our dreams of becoming millionaires come true, always taking care of the language, always taking into consideration that it is a pyramid scheme. To begin with, these people do not live on sales, but on their ability to attract new investors to their scheme, which although if you study it well qualifies as a scam, it certainly seems a legal activity because it is not prohibited in the world, but I can not help thinking that this is very similar to the scheme created by Carlo Ponzi.

The idea is to attract investors, usually people who are unemployed and desperate in the face of the harshness of life with low income. First you have to invest your funds in products of dubious origin and extremely expensive, make other people believe that they are the eighth wonder of the world and get at least five more people to join this business in order for you to make a profit. The problem lies in the fact that it becomes increasingly difficult to convince others to join and therefore, you end up losing your money and feeling the desperation of poverty more latent than ever.

These types of multilevel businesses are growing like weeds in Latin America, a region characterized by inequality and poverty, therefore, it is plagued by people in need of more or less paid jobs at any cost. Now with the tremendous public health, social and economic impact generated by the COVID crisis and the collapse of the fiat model, multilevel companies have integrated to their army of acolytes the so-called Influencers, personalities of the Internet world that seem more like a mixture of TV or movie stars with pastors of a church than connoisseurs of a specific activity.

The case of Nu Skin, a famous multilevel marketing company that amassed a great fortune in Argentina by using the advice and recommendations that the most famous influencers of that country exerted on their acolytes, generates a question about the morals and ethics of these people with respect to the use of their media power to generate fortunes by deceiving the population. It is clear to me that it is legal, but I am also absolutely sure that from an ethical point of view this is a real shame. What is the image of a person who recommends items of dubious quality with the purpose of integrating the most vulnerable population of the country to a business scheme that does not suit them?

When the affected population raised its voice to denounce this scam and the Argentine government was forced to take legal action against the company, the influencers, far from apologizing or assuming their mistake, chose to join the company's image cleaning campaign through TV journalists, written press and, of course, social networks. This situation makes me think: will this be the new form of centralized domination on the web? For the moment I would like to tell people who are attracted to this kind of schemes that 95% of the investors end up abandoning the business and losing all the money invested, by the way, in products that are usually offered for less value and equal quality by other brands.

Of course, before investing in something it is always necessary to investigate what it is about, this applies to the world of cryptocurrencies as for any type of business or enterprise that we want to do at some point in our lives. On the Internet there are plenty of scammers, as well as people of dubious morals, knowing how to detect this type of characters is essential to avoid losing money or at least not to fall into these fraudulent schemes.
