Introduction

As we have seen several cards and characters in the recent past, we will look at one of the abilities today. The one that we would be discussing is the “monsters lose all abilities” rule. Under this rule, all abilities of the monsters are removed, and the monsters do what they are meant for. Meaning, melee attacker will only do melee attacks, magic attackers go for magic while ranged attackers do ranged attacks barring in the first position. No abilities like life-leech, sneak-and-snipe, self-healing, etc., work.

In such a circumstance, it is difficult to wonder what you should do in the battle. I’ve always had this question until it became quite obvious. The idea under such a circumstance would be to outlast the enemy. If that is the case, we need to bring monsters with the most health and attack value. Don’t make the mistake of expecting your melee attackers to attack from any position other than the first one. That’s one of the most common errors. So, anything more than a tank would not serve the purpose if the opponent has monsters attacking from all positions.

Then what do you do? It is simple. Get a strong tank which is usually a melee attacker in the first position, while filling the remaining slots with ranged and magic attackers. But ensure that these are strong attackers having attack values in three or above. If you aren’t sure about your tank, then add just one more melee attacker in the second position as a backup. But remember, the second monster won’t attack until it comes to the first position.

I am sure you would want to look at one of the battles to understand this better. We will do that in a moment. But before that, how about we get to know Splinterlands and then move on to our discussion? So, let’s do it.

What Game is Splinterlands?

Well, it is one of the earliest blockchain-based collectible games. Though I started playing the game relatively late, I should have had gotten going early in hindsight. Anyway, no need to despair. There are so many opportunities no matter when you start.

Splinterlands is a digital card game that allows you to collect, trade, battle, rent, and even earn on the cards. It is one of the most generous games that I have seen where cards, potions, Dark Energy Crystals (DEC. Cryptocurrency) are given out every day to thousands of players for just playing and winning daily quests. And there are tournaments that you can play or guilds that you can join.

Just to give you an idea of how lucky you can get in Splinterlands - read my story of getting cards worth $327 for buying few packs worth $20 only.

Got Cards Worth $327 for $20

And this is just a small number. I have witnessed people getting uber-expensive cards in their pack and selling it for as high as $6500. This means the game has interested buyers for your cards too. In fact, there is a whole Splinterlands marketplace.

If all that interests you and you want to try out the game, then I leave a link below for you to join.

Monsters Lose All Abilities Rule | One of My Favorites

Monsters lose all abilities rule is one of my favorites simply because it is a test of the raw strength of our monsters. The battle is all about the strongest and the healthiest monsters going against the opponent. And the only piece of strategy that we can really think of is to get the right summoner that would augment the strength of the monsters in battle.

To give you an example, if I chose a battle lineup with magic monsters, it would be ideal to choose Alric Stormbringer (Water Splinter) or Delwyn Dragonscale (Dragon Splinter) as the summoner. Why? Because they increase the attack value of all magic monsters’ by one. That, therefore, augments the monsters’ attack value. Similarly, some summoners augment the strength of ranged attackers as much as melee attackers. So choose the right summoner. The summoner would be the single strategic call in any battle.

I would usually avoid summoners which restrict the opponent’s monsters. Like for example, Contessa L’ament, which reduces the attack value of ranged attackers in the opponent's lineup. Why? Because it is difficult to predict what the opponent is going to bring into battle. On the other hand, I know for sure what I am taking into battle. So, I might as well choose the best ones that augment my strength.

Anyway, let’s look at one battle.

Testing the Rule in Battle

Okay, this happened to be my favorite rule with a cherry on top. The 46-mana cap would allow me to get the strongest monsters into the battle. If you are guessing what would be the choice of monsters, then I had already spoken about it in the last section. I would probably go with a melee attacker tank and choose magic monsters.

Needless to say, I will use the Water Splinter since Alric Stormbringer would augment my magic attacker’s attack value by one. That would be strengthening my team quite well. I may, in fact, use the Kraken as the tank. Remember, the Kraken wouldn’t have the taunt ability, but since all monster will lose their abilities, they will only target the monster in the first position. No sneak, snipe, or opportunity in play.

Anyway, let’s get to the battle.

The Face-Off

The face-off screen shows what I am up to and what I am against. Prima facie, my choice, looks to be strong. The choice of the Sand Worm in the second position by the opponent does not make sense as it wouldn’t attack from that position. However, I also noticed that I was up against a bot. That’s the second time in succession that I was fighting against a bot. What luck!

Anyway, let’s get to know the lineup, starting with the opponent.

Summoner: Bortus | Water Splinter | Ability – Decreases the attack value of all enemy magic monsters by one.

Monsters:

Position 1: Kraken | A strong melee attacker with an attack value of four and three armor.

Position 2: Sand Worm | Melee attacker with an attack value of five.

Position 3: Spirit Miner | Magic attacker with an attack value of two.

Position 4: Captain’s Ghost | Magic attacker with an attack value of two.

Position 5: Naga Windmaster | Ranged attacker with an attack value of one.

Position 6: Giant Squid | Ranged attacker with an attack value of two. It has also has armor.

The opponent’s lineup had magic and ranged attackers in the lineup. The only thing that was the right choice for the opponent was the summoner. The opponent’s summoner would neutralize my summoner’s ability, and therefore all my magic monsters will have their original attack value.

Anyway, on to my monsters.

Summoner: Alric Stormbringer | Water Splinter | Ability – Increases all friendly magic monsters’ attack value by one.

Monsters:

Position 1: Kraken | A strong melee attacker with an attack value of four and three armor.

Position 2: Captain’s Ghost | Magic attacker with an attack value of two.

Position 3: Dwarven Wizard | Magic attacker with an attack value of one.

Position 4: Spirit Miner | Magic attacker with an attack value of two.

Position 5: Coral Wraith | Magic attacker with an attack value of two.

Position 6: Phantom of the Abyss | Magic monster with an attack value of three.

Now, if the opponent had chosen any other summoner other than Bortus. The attack value of all my magic monsters would have been:

3 (Captain’s Ghost) + 2 (Dwarven) + 3 (Spirit Miner) + 3 (Coral Wraith) + 4 (Phantom) = 15

That would have been enough to take down the opponent’s Kraken in just one round. However, since the opponent chose Bortus as a summoner, the attack value was:

2 (Captain’s Ghost) + 1 (Dwarven) + 2 (Spirit Miner) + 2 (Coral Wraith) + 3 (Phantom) = 10

Though lesser, it is not such a bad thing. At least, my monsters in the second position onwards are stronger than the opponent’s. So, a good chance that I could win.

Let them rumble now.

The Battle Begins

Near the end of round one, it was evident that the opponent’s Kraken had taken more beating than mine. And it was still awaiting my Captain’s Ghost’s attack. So, that was some drubbing. 😊

Before the end of Round 2, the opponent lost his Kraken and Sand Worm. The Spirit Miner, too, lost some health. The best part was that my Kraken was still standing. So, chances of me losing from here were slim, or maybe, non-existent.

The Battle Races to Conclusion

At the beginning of round four, I had five monsters to the opponent’s three. Both of us had the Captain’s Ghost in front and at the same health level. But the good thing for me was that there were more magic monsters to follow, which meant they could attack from the first position. In the case of the opponent, there were just two ranged attackers. So, they will be handicapped should they come to the first position.

So, I wasn’t wrong. Before the end of the round, the last of the opponent’s monsters perished. And my Captain’s Ghost was still standing. That should have been something.

With that, the battle was over. Just to reiterate – I won. 😊

Lose All Abilities? | Use Brute Force

Many forget that when the monsters lose all abilities, the only thing that we can do is use brute force. So, go for your biggest and strongest monsters and see if you can find summoners that can augment their abilities. That’s all you need to win the battle.

Does it work all the time? Well, most of the time, for sure. And for the small bit of time when it does not work, it boils down to the opponent having chosen a good lineup as well.

So, remember, if it is monsters lose all abilities, you’ve got to go for brute force!! 😊

Have fun! 😊
