The EU is dead, long live the EU

Let's say you're in my position, and you are looking for a new car. And as a self employed person, you are looking very good which car will cost you how much in fuel, and especially taxes. Because the taxes have gone through the roof for normal cars with full combustion engines, so hybrid cars and electric cars, are the ones we need to look for, or as a self employed person you will pay more taxes than the complete value of the car. But not all those 'green' rules are the same in the European Union. So, car prices are very different if you look outside of the borders.

Take this example, this BMW X3 hybrid (electric/diesel) has less than 50 grams of CO2/kilometer, which is an important boundry in Belgium. As long you stay below that, you're fine when it comes to taxes. But that has consequences for the second hand car market. Cars with that characteristic are sold sometimes 10k Euros above their real value.

For a hybrid BMW X3 with less than 15000 kilometres you pay above 60000 EUR these days in Belgium.

But then we have a look in Germany:

Now this is not 100 % the same car, but it is very close, but it counts as an example. Most cars like these are sold in Germany for 50000 EUR or less... And what does the European Union say, free market, free trade. So I am free to go and buy this car in Germany and use it in Belgium. Without extra costs.

What does this tell me? The European Union is a hell hole, and an economic disaster. Nothing less, nothing more. So I am off to buy a car in Germany, because I would be mad not to. Sadly for the Belgian merchants.

Beware what you buy and where, here in Europe, it pays to look around!

Sincerely,
