Still playing catchup but almost there.

1 March has been quite an eventful day over the crypto years.

Silk Road popped up on the Bitcointalk forum, Linode got hacked and the Sacramento Kings started taking Bitcoin payments.

1 March 2011 - Silkroad appears on Bitcoin Forum

Silk Road was an infamous anonymous black market operating on the dark web.

It was launched early in 2011 and ran for two and half years until it was shut down by the FBI in October 2013.

The site was operated (alledgedly) by Ross Ulbricht under the pseudonym Dread Pirate Roberts. He was arrested by the FBI on 2 October 2013.

The vast majority of the transactions on the site were for illegal drug purchases. During its short lifetime $ 1.2 billion of cryptocurrency passed through Silk Road.

Much of the initial discussion about Silk Road took place on the BitcoinTalk forum.

On 1 March a new user 'silkroad' started a thread on the forum to promote the anonymous marketplace.

The user who signed as 'Silk Road Staff' posted...

Silk Road is into it's third week after launch and I am very pleased with the results. There are several sellers and buyers finding mutually agreeable prices, and as of today, 28 transactions have been made!

Of course, it is in its infant stages and I have many ideas about where to go with it. But I am turning to you, the community, to give me your input and to have a say in what direction it takes.

The general mood of this community is that we are up to something big, something that can really shake things up. Bitcoin and Tor are revolutionary and sites like Silk Road are just the beginning.

During the time Silk Road was running the price of Bitcoin rose from 0.8 cents to $130.

1 March 2012 - 46,000 BTC Stolen from Linode

Linode was a popular cloud-hosting provider.

On 1 March hackers exploited a vulnerability in a widely used Webhost that gave unfettered access to a number of Bitcoin wallets on Linode.

They managed to steal 46,703 BTC (worth $228,000 at the time) from eight wallets.

The largest loss was of around 43,000 BTC that were taken from the wallet of the Bitcoin trading platform Bitcoinica.

Another 3,094 BTC were taken from the wallet of Marek Palatinus, a freelance programmer from the Czech Republic.

Lead Bitcoin programmer Gavin Andresen, also lost the 5 BTC he had in the Bitcoin Faucet hosted on Linode.

1 March 2014 - Sacramento Kings Accept Bitcoin

The US basketball team Sacramento Kings became the first NBA team to accept Bitcoin.

Bitcoin could be used both online and at the team's Sleep Train Arena to pay for items such as tickets, jerseys, hot dogs and beer.

Bitpay provided the service to process transactions.

Project Update

The second month of This Day In Crypto History is now underway.

There are still quite a few blanks to fill for March but we shall overcome !

Overall coverage has now reached 60% of days across the year with 371 events gathered in total.

Now targeting the two-thirds point - should hit that in the next week or so.

Thank you to all readers for following this project into its second month.

Feel free to chip in with any events you find along the way.

The more the merrier !
