Bartolomeu Dias was a Portuguese navigator who discovered the passage from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian Ocean bypassing the Cape of Storms in the extreme south of Africa.
Bartolomeu Dias was born in Portugal, around 1450. Descended from a family of navigators, he acquired knowledge of mathematics and astronomy.
The navigator lived at a time when Portugal was at the forefront of the expansion of Europe that began in 1415 with the taking of Ceuta in North Africa.
