Trees A tree is a perennial plant with an elongated stem, or trunk, supporting branches and leaves, mostly. Trees tend to be long-lived, some reaching several thousand years old. Trees have been in existence for more than 350 million years. It is estimated that there are some three trillion mature trees in the world. Trees usually reproduce using seeds. Also, trees play a crucial role in reducing erosion and moderating the climate. Co2 emissions In the UK, a person emits an average of 7 tons of CO2 per year. Although the carbon absorption capacity can vary, it is generally considered that a tree can store about 167 kg of CO2 per year or 1 ton of CO2 per year for 6 mature trees. This means that more than 67 trees would have to be planted a year to offset the CO2 emissions of a single Brit !!! How do trees fight climate change? The unique process that trees and plants use to turn light energy from the sun into oxygen is known as photosynthesis. “Photosynthesis” is a Greek word meaning “light” and “putting together.” During this process, trees harness the sun’s energy, using it to put carbon dioxide gas together with water in order to produce food and oxygen. The production of oxygen is a beneficial result of photosynthesis, but it is not the main purpose of this process. In fact, oxygen is simply a byproduct. Plants create their own food through photosynthesis. During this process, a plant’s roots absorb water from the ground, and its leaves take in light energy and carbon dioxide. The plant uses these elements to make fats, proteins and starches that are then used to sustain themselves. How to erase 100 years of carbon emissions? An area the size of the United States could be restored as a forest with the potential of erasing nearly 100 years of carbon emissions, according to a study that determines how many trees the Earth could support. “Our study shows clearly that forest restoration is the best climate change solution available now”, said Tom Crowther, the senior author of the study. That does not alter the vital importance of protecting existing forests and phasing out fossil fuels since new forests would take decades to mature, Crowther said. “If we act now, this could cut carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by up to 25 percent, to levels last seen almost a century ago”. It could take more than a hundred years to add enough mature forest to get sufficient levels of reduction. Meanwhile, 40 billion tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) from burning fossil fuels are being added to the atmosphere every year, said Glen Peters, research director at Norway’s Center for International Climate Research. From trees to Coorest NFTrees A real-world asset like a tree can be transformed into a digital asset like a NFT. In this way, we can trigger a positive green ecological footprint at the same time with social investing, providing profits for the whole society.
