US citizens began to receive passports for bitcoins

Peninsula Visa, a company specializing in passport services for US residents, has opened accepting payments in bitcoin.

Cryptocurrency payments are processed through the Coinbase Commerce system.

Bitcoin can already be used to pay for a passport renewal, name change, and a second passport. Other services related to the issuance of new passports and visas are planned to be activated during 2021.

“Never before has it been possible to pay for a US passport with digital currency,” said Peninsula Visa COO Evan James.

He added that the coronavirus pandemic influenced the decision to digitize payments.

In June, Venezuelan authorities attempted to use bitcoin as a payment method for issuing passports. However, just a few hours after the feature was introduced, the ability to pay in BTC disappeared from the site.
