Buying things you need is always a hassle. Mainly because they cost money. But it's something you just have to do, an unavoidable part of life. That doesn't you can't have a little bit of "fun" with it and save yourself some of those finances. A great way to do this when buying the essentials is to buy in bulk. There are a few different things one needs to take note of when buying in bulk.

The first rule of thumb I use, is that if its something that won't expire for a very long time or at all, to buy as much as possible, within reason. Why wouldn't you. If a gallon of cleaning product is cheaper than a liter I might as well buy the gallon and have enough for almost 2 years or something. We did that with vegetable oil here, buying 3 liter bottles instead of 1 liter bottles. This also comes in handy when there is a shortage of that particular item, which was the case for the oil. Having bought in bulk, we had enough to last the shortage and therefore inflation of prices.

This works with many items. Even with something simple like pure honey, which practically never expires. And the added bonus is that you save even more money when prices go up for whatever reason, because your bulk items are all still at the old price that you bought them.

Be mindful though to use your head when buying in bulk. Think about what's essential. Or if the item will be as good as it was in a few years. Also check everything in terms of quantity, price and quality. Sometimes in stores the bigger items are more expensive per standard unit than the smaller ones. 100 grams might be $1, while 1 kilogram might be $11. You'd actually be profiting more when buying the smaller units. Of course this is sometimes a tactic of the store, so they can get rid of the smaller things, but hey, that's the game.

Even services can be bought in bulk to profit from discounts, like paying for a full year of health insurance instead of each month. I've never really recorded the numbers, but I'm pretty sure this habit has already saved me quite a bit on expenses, and will probably save even more money for me in the future. So I will happily keep exploring the world of bulk buying.
