While growing up, we were used to that mindset that the only way to make it in life is to struggle, work hard and you will be successful. But right now the orientation has changed, everyone is more on the Work Smart, Not Hard perspective now. I remember making these statement one day, because a painter I asked to come paint my house, asked me what I do for a living when he came to house. This painter was a neighbor in my previous house, so while he was painting he told me that for the little time he had known me, he has never seen me leave the house but still, I can afford basic things in life and pay my bills.

I had the liberty of telling him how smart work can make you earn more than hard work. He told me that ever since he started fending for himself, he has never worked smart, he had only worked harder. When I meant work smart, I meant sitting in front of his computer trying to make money. All he has been doing is physical manual labor that requires physical strength and physical skills.

I was reading someone’s article one day on Hive and I couldn’t help but notice when the writer made this sentence:

I prefer to use money I make offline wisely because I worked so hard for that money. But I don’t mind risking money I made online.

This statement got me thinking, people are subtly considering online money making lazy money. Because you don’t sweat or bust your ass off to make it like when working physically. And this is the type of money almost everyone wants right now. That’s the reason you see some people migrating to tech because they feel it’s easier to be in front of computer all day and make money. They are lots of people earning lots of money from blockchain gaming now and lots of us are earning a lot of money from blogging on Hive. Imagine being asked what your profession is, or being asked what you did for a living. How do you think the next person would feel when you tell them you are a blockchain gamer or someone who earns morning from sharing its idea on social media? They won’t see it as a real job, especially when you are from Nigeria. You can be making millions of Naira(Nigerian Currency) and your parents will still be expecting you to get a “real job”.

When I told someone I trade crypto, the man told me that he doesn’t blame our current youths that just want things easy these days. He didn’t consider trading cryptocurrency a job or a serious means of income.

*Do You Know Why?

This is because they came from a generation that is built on extreme physical degrading hard working mentality, thinking that is the only way to success. They believed that if you are not physically straining yourself to make that money, you are lazy and you are not seriously working. They prioritize their job or their so called hard labor work over their family, peace, love , joy and theirselves. They believed that if you are not killing yourself while working(figuratively) then you are not working hard enough.

They fail to understand that this generation still work, but they don’t want to work to death. This generation is so comfortable without the idea of working hard in terms of physical manual labor and don’t want to be exploited by the governments or the people in power or their employers.

The older generation worked so hard but for someone else. They made their employers billionaires while they went home with pennies. But now, we work for ourselves. Just take a look at Hive, you don’t have an employer when you are blogging, you own all your contents you make on Hive. When you play the blockchain game, you own everything including your earnings.

I watched my father work for over 45 years and he is the most hardworking man I know, but when he retired he was offered $4,000 as gratuity. Most of the money my dad made while I was growing up was from investments. But you get my point, all those hard works didn’t make him as much money as he wanted to have. I can remember my dad coming back from Work some days and complain to my sister and I about how his boss takes credit for some of his works. Now this is the problem with the older generation. This current generation don’t want that. So they are working way smarter than hard to the extent that the older generation is not considering the work as work.

This generation is a generation that grew up watching their parents work so hard they gave up their dreams, and happiness, but it wasn’t enough. We also watched them sacrifice so much and earned so little, so this is the time for us to earn our true value based on what we contribute.
