Here's a crude, blunt instrument I put together in Google Sheets that'll allow you to work out when you'll be a whale, based on just powering up all your rewards.

I've used it to calculate that I'll be a Hive Whale by around December 2032 when I'll have a stake of around 560K Hive Power - the amounts required for Whale status keep increasing so I've upped in by a few tens of thousand Hive to future proof it a little.

I'm already a LEO Whale, apparently, but I've also used it to calculate that I'll have 380K LEO POWER by 2032 too! Lord knows what that makes me - let's just call it 'fucking minted'.

How the calculator works

  1. Enter your current Hive or LEO power in box B2
  2. Enter your monthly earnings in box B3 - drag it down as far as you like if you want to reflect standard earnings for the future, or change as appropriate.
  3. Enter your monthly percentage curation return as a decimal in box C3 and drag down.

The formula for adding on your monthly earnings and then compounding the monthly interest is simply:

(current HP + monthly earnings) +(current HP* monthly curation interest rate)

=(B2+C2)+(B2 times D2) =(B3+C3)+(B3 times D3) and so on and so on....

If you simply add in your own stats in row one, it should then recalculate yer returns for the next decade or so based on your own stats.

My LEO calculations

I've added in my own stats for LEO to start with as follows:

  • Current LP - 32300
  • Monthly earnings of around 450 LEO based on my recent analysis here.
  • My rough curation returns, around 16%, which is 1.3% a month OR 0.013 in decimal.

I've kept it simple (out of necessity) and assumed I'll keep on earning at the same rate and that my curation return will remain the same....

After 1 year...

I'm gaining at roughly the rate of 1K LEO a month, split equally between author and curation returns.

After 5 years...

100K LEO reached (noice!) and I'm now earning 2000 LEO a month, mostly from curation returns

After 10 years

I've broken the 300K LEO barrier and am earning 5K LEO a month in curation returns, catching up with the HIVE returns despite a lower stake (in pure LEO/ Hive terms) thanks to the slightly higher percentage on the curation returns for LEO compared to Hive.

My own personal Hive projections....

I added in my own stats for Hive to start with as follows:

  • Current HP - 64500 (round up, OK!),
  • Monthly earnings based on @abh1234's monthly stats
  • my rough curation returns, around 12%, which is 1% a month (no need for a calculator there!) OR 0.01 in decimal just in case you REALLY know nothing about maths.

I've again kept it simple (out of necessity) and assumed I'll keep on earning at the same rate and that my curation return will remain the same....

In year one...

I'll be gaining at the rate which starts at +1.5K per month, increasing to about 1.8K per month by the end of the year, ending with just shy of 82K Hive by the end of 2021.

After 5 years...

I'm gaining at the rate of 2.5K Hive to 3K Hive a month, meaning MOST of my earnings are now coming from curation by this point.

I go through the 200K barrier in 2026.

And after 10 years...

I'm making curation returns of around 6K Hive a month, and by this time the earnings are maybe insignificant?!?

All things probably won't remain equal, but this is just a bit of fun

Of course HIVE and LEO are dynamic systems and there are plenty of things which can alter the returns on both platforms such as:

  • one's own posting and curation habits
  • Other people's posting and curation habits - with only around 30% of Hive especially powered up, there's plenty of scope for the rewards to be split more evenly, and with so many other earning options on LEO, there's plenty of room for movement there too.
  • Hardforks can change the rewards structure too!

So I'll be amazed if the projections turn out like this, but then again, this is crypto and crazy things can happen, and sow who knows, maybe we will get some stability for a decade and things will go pretty much as projected!

Acorn fed pigs can fly, you know!
