Twitter recently analysed 4 billion tweets from 2016 to the end of 2019 to reveal the most commonly used hashtags. (Link here)

They then used a combination of human coding and machine learning to remove topics such as politics and sports and identified six main cultural themes that people are talking about on Twitter.

These six themes represent the biggest uptrends in conversation over the past four years, and they’ve by no means stopped trending upwards.

In order of increasing popularity since 2016, these six themes are:

  • Tweets about ‘Creator Culture’ - up 462% (tweets about creative currency, ‘hustle life’ and connecting through video).
  • One Planet tweets – up 285% (tweets on the ethical self, sustainability, and clean corporations)
  • Tweets about Well Being - up 225% (digital monitoring, holistic health and being well together)
  • ‘My Identity’ tweets are up – 167% (fandom, gender redefined and ‘representing me’)
  • Tech Life tweets are up – 166% (blended realities, future tech and ‘tech angst’)
  • Tweets about ‘Everyday Wonders’ are up 161% - (DIY spirituality, awe of nature and cosmic fascination).

What strikes me about these themes, is what a natural fit so many of them are with Hive, especially the first trend ‘creator’ culture which is up a massive 462% on twitter.

You can download individual reports on each of the 18 main themes above (three themes per broader theme) and find out more details about the specific topics which are becoming increasingly popular on Twitter and about the specific hashtags.

The creator culture theme is an obvious fit for Hive

Tweets about creator culture have increased almost 500% in the last four years, with mentions of ‘side hustle’ being up 231% - so this theme of creating your own content and looking at it as a cheeky way of making something on the side, that’s massive news, and Hive is primarily about giving people a platform to do just that.

It strikes me that rather than just using #hive or #splinterlands in our tweets, we should be chucking in some of these hashtags too, to extend our reach!

Here are some of the most popular hashtags under the ‘create it till you make it’ cluster…

I take two things from this:

  1. At the moment, anyone who tweets anything about Hive should be including one of these tags – that means the most effective tweets will be linked to one of their posts – it’s a really easy thing to do if you’re an artist. Every single person should be using the #sidehustle tag
  2. The fact that #newpatron is a trending theme suggests there’s real utility in making Hive a bit more Patreon like, not sure how that might work!?!?

Livestreaming and Podcasting are massive on Twitter

#supportsmallstreamers is one of the most popular tags under this – we’ve got a lot of Discord shows that could usefully use this, and I know we’ve got quite a few musicians on Hive – so again tweets on music content using any of the above would be great.

Art tweets are HUGE!

10 000 % is a pretty big increase (probably from a small base), but art tweets more generally is on the increase, and here’s the main hashtags…

I know there’s a growing art community on Hive, especially since the launch of NFTs, which bridge the topics of Art and ‘Side Hustle’ and ‘future tech’ and ‘identity’, so anyone that posts art on Hive has a great potential to reach a wider audience.

Final Thoughts – what counts as effective marketing?

As I see it the most effective marking for Hive would consist of the following:

  1. Create great content that fits in with one of the six themes above.
  2. Tweet about it using any of the above hashtags and link to that content on Hive.

That’s it.

So rather than tweeting about Splinterlands and using the hashtags #splinterlands and #hive, we should be using #gaming #sidehustle #challenge #win

I’m sure if people like what they see, they’ll find their own way to Hive.

Final thoughts

I’ve only focused on the most popular of six themes covered in the Twitter research, because it happens to be the most natural fit with Hive, but there’s plenty more scope for tweeting about topics on the other main themes.

It's maybe a little disconcerting that there's been such a huge increase in interest in 'creative culture' and 'side hustling' on Twitter, and that's precisely what Hive is doing, and yet there's been a flat-lining of users over the past few months, or maybe this is a fresh new, crypto naive user market just waiting to be tapped, and we just need to reach them, with any or all of the above ####!

Of course, this is how to attract users, how to attract investors is another matter…….
