This post is inspired by @acesontop and his #askleo post about where and how we earned our first money.

When looking back at my life, I find that I started working at a very early age. When I was 12 I began working as a soccer referee for the local intramural league. I would find myself randomly blowing the whistle as 4 and 5 year olds pulled on one another’s hair. We made about $10 a game, which is a ton of money for a 12 year old to buy the new Pokémon games with!

My first ‘real’ job was actually at an ice cream store a few years later when I was 15. I remember being SO bad at the job. When I had to make milkshakes I’d often find the mixing blade slicing through the bottom of the paper cup I was making the milkshake in and finding its way to the floor. The respect I gained for food service workers in my short month before being fired from that job was immense! We had to put up with rude customers, handle inventory, know how to make every menu item, remember where everything is in the store and be able to give recommendations and explanations of everything a customer could find on the menu. For $8.38 an hour (New Jersey minimum wage) it was safe to say that I did not cry too much after my services were no longer needed, but I do miss the free ice cream at the end of every shift!

Taking the same approach as @katerinaramm, I figure I would discuss the first money that I ever made digitally.

My first money that I ever made in a digital sense was a Bitcoin purchase in late 2017. I made about a 10% gain on my $100 investment and was absolutely ecstatic. The only thing that could have brought me down would have been a crash from 15k to just over 6k… Oh yeah… That actually happened… I was quite young and immediately got terrified and sold to salvage whatever I was able to. Ironic to think that I would be so interested in investing in and writing about crypto when my first experience with it was almost a 60% loss! But I suppose I am a sucker for pain and am right back to it four years later. I figure I must have just had some bad luck!

Through reflection on this I’m really proud of how far I’ve come. Not necessarily in a financial sense, but I’ve done much more research, assessed my goals and am now on a path that will hopefully lead to success in the future. If there is another huge loss in my future, at least I will have the maturity to hold on and wait for the recovery to come!
