Augmented reality pertains to the art of creating a virtual reality that overlays or integrates with the real world. It is the science of using information technologies (3D computer graphics, computer generated images, video, text and interactivity) to create an experience that can only be perceived from within an altered environment. The idea behind augmented reality is to provide a representation of something existing in the real physical world, but with the ability for the user to make use of the information that is available in the virtual world.

One of the first applications of augmented reality was, of course, Google Glass. Another application, called the MetaVR, is a development that applies similar principles to the Metaverse, a digital network of virtual spaces. Metaverse uses holographic overlays of items (such as shopping carts, restaurant menus and maps) so that they can be used for interaction. Although augmented reality is still a fairly new technology, it’s quickly becoming a reality as 5G continues to roll out.

The 1980s bought us 1G (first-generation) where one could only make & receive phone calls. The 1990s bought us 2G (second-generation) where if you didn’t feel like talking to someone or needed to get a message to someone quickly, one could now text and/or send an email. In the early 2000s, 3G (third-generation) came along where one could now stream video, but it was a bit slow. 4G (fourth-generation) solved that problem by expanding the capacity of bandwidth. But systems are clogged up again as consumers and businesses do must of their communication through wireless networks.

5G ((short for 5th Generation) is the next generation of mobile communication. 5G brings three new aspects to the table: greater speed (to move more data), lower latency (to be more responsive), and the ability to connect a lot more devices at once (for sensors and smart devices). 5G will be a whole new kind of network, enabling new experiences that will change how we live, work, and play.

Cybersecurity firm Palo Alto Networks (PANW) on Nov. 19 unveiled new security tools to secure 5G infrastructure and web-connected industrial devices.

Chip foundry Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) has joined the IBD Leaderboard as well. According to Morgan Stanley, "TSMC is the sole supplier of Apple's application processor, with around 20% revenue exposure to Apple iPhone." Apple's new 5G iPhones use the new processor.

Skyworks Solutions (SWKS), Cirrus Logic and Analog Devices (ADI) also make chips built into smartphones.

Many chipmakers sell into the 5G network market. They include Marvell Technology (MRVL), Broadcom (AVGO), Intel (INTC), Texas Instruments (TXN) and Analog Devices.

Cellphone tower operators American Tower (AMT), Crown Castle (CCI) and SBA Communications (SBAC) also could get a 5G boost, analysts say. Crown Castle will be a 5G infrastructure partner of Dish Network.
