Artificial Intelligence (AI) 101

Artificial intelligence has been getting quite a bit of media buzz lately, with Elon Musk's OpenAI beating the pros in DOTA 2 or artificial intelligence recreating the periodic table in a matter of hours. It's impossible to spend the day on the internet. without finding at least one article that talks about a new achievement achieved in this field. In fact, today artificial intelligence is no longer just a distant dream but firmly integrated into our lives and many apps and online services we use, such as YouTube and Facebook, make it important for us to understand what artificial intelligence is. and how it works when we use applications and services so frequently that uses AI to improve our experience.

In short, artificial intelligence involves the creation of computer systems perfectly capable of perform a range of tasks commonly associated with human skills such as thinking, understanding, analyzing, and more.

Think of OpenAI beating the pros in a DOTA 2 game. It's a complex game that will require you to adapt to the situation that arises when it does. Now imagine playing a computer against a human in a scenario where the combinations are endless. How does this happen?

Computer code has always worked in such a way that people define everything for the computer and just pass it to the computer, which can then perform a very limited set of tasks based on the information it receives.

Here the human being defines all possibilities. But with artificial intelligence, humans can easily create a system that can teach itself to define other possibilities that humans might not have thought of. For example, instead of giving a computer 10 photos of an apple and then asking you, to pick one of these apples from a group of photos, feed all possible examples of an apple into a computer, regardless of size, shape, and color, and "teach" it to recognize patterns and decide for itself whether something is an apple or not. Facebook uses a very similar technique when it suggests tags on photos you upload.

Artificial intelligence uses huge amounts of data, discovers patterns in that data, and then finds a way to use the data to solve a problem detected.

It can be extremely useful when it comes to increasing efficiency and saving time, mainly because it's so much faster than humans and doesn't tire, it can add a lot more to existing intelligence by creating new patterns and finding solutions, it is much more precise than humans and one of the most important factors is that it has learned and grown itself, which means it is able to learn from existing and new data itself.

Artificial intelligence is growing fast. the tremendous pace that permeates a range of areas including human resources, finance, law, education, security, and healthcare. This has been made possible mainly by huge advances in hardware (imagine the computing power it takes to analyze all that data) and in subfields like machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing.

It has been quite a bit of discussion about the ethical aspect of artificial intelligence, especially on data collection methods, and the security aspect. But the fact is that it is one of the most amazing discoveries or developments that mankind has ever made and it is revolutionizing every single sector.

Since it's inexpensive and much more efficient, we can definitely expect massive advances
