Currently I am reading a book titled Atomic Habits written by James Clear.

Only 1/3rd into it and it's already an interesting read with some thought provoking ways to look at things such as habits and goals.

Goals for 2023, tisk tisk!

A big take away so far is that goals are not great for motivation and the desire to reach them is essentially fickle.

Keeping your eye on that prize far off in the distance opens us to lose motivation as we are not feeling any reward or progress many times along the way.

Habit habits habits....

Developing the habits of someone that accomplishes X or is the type of person that does Y is what keeps one going and basically puts motivation on autopilot.

In the book he put a great example about people trying to quit smoking.

When offered a cigarette one person replies "no thanks I'm trying to quit."

The other person responds "no thanks I am not a smoker."

Guess which one has better success quitting in the end?

Because it comes down to a question...

When we want to achieve something we can ask ourselves - what does someone that accomplishes X do? How do they identify?

So if you have a goal to run a marathon, all you need to do is ask...what are the things that a marathon runner does everyday. Then you adapt that small everyday habits of that lifestyle.

And as you do these "habits" since you now identify as a marathon runner, the impact build slowly over time until that is actually who you are.

Basically it is lifestyle change through micro-habits.

It will be interesting to see what else the book has to offer.
