For the weekly challenge from @olga.maslievich #saturdaymemories, I decided to remember a trip to Nevytske Castle with my friend @wal.life 😊
Відбулось це все в листопаді минулого року і поїздка вийшла дуже неочікуваною, так як першочергово ми зби рались просто сходити на каву. Але це був би не Ужгород, якби наше кавування не переросло в чергову пригоду.
It all happened in November last year and the trip was very unexpected because first of all, we were going to just go for coffee. But this would not be Uzhhorod if our coffee did not turn into another adventure.
Яка історія у Невицького замку? / What is the history of Nevytske Castle?
Невицький замок це одна із найдревніших споруд Закарпатської області, котра має купу цікавих історичних фактів та легенд. Ним керували представники абсолютно різних епох, народів та національностей, його декілька разів руйнували вороги, але потім відбудовували заново.
Nevytske Castle is one of the oldest buildings in the Transcarpathian region, which has a lot of interesting historical facts and legends. It was ruled by representatives of completely different epochs, peoples and nationalities, it was destroyed several times by enemies but then rebuilt.
Історики вважають, що Невицький замок звели десь в 12 столітті, адже саме тоді про нього з'явились перші згадки і використовувалась ця споруда для того, щоб захистити угорські землі від монголо-татар.
Historians believe that Nevytske Castle was built somewhere in the 12th century because it was then that the first mention of it appeared and this building was used to protect Hungarian lands from the Mongol-Tatars.
Трохи згодом замок потрапив в руки трасильванцям, котрі розбудували територію та додали колодязь глибиною в 4,5 кілометри для збору дощової води!
Shortly afterwards, the castle fell into the hands of the Trasilvans, who rebuilt the area and added a well 4.5 kilometres deep to collect rainwater!
А от з 1328 року та аж до 17 століття власниками замку стали угорські магнати - Другети. За період їхнього правління замок отримав максимальний рівень укріплення, тому що він був єдиною оборонною спорудою краю. Також Другети розбудували територію і добавили вежі, бійниці та декілька ліній оборони.
But from 1328 until the 17th century the owners of the castle were Hungarian magnates - Drugeti. During their reign, the castle received the maximum level of fortification, because it was the only defensive structure of the region. Drugeti also rebuilt the area and added towers, loopholes and several lines of defence.
Проте десь в 16 столітті в процесі битви замок не зміг протистояти натиску і був практично повністю зруйнуваним. Вважається, що саме тоді Невицький замок отримав сьогоднішній вигляд.
However, somewhere in the 16th century during the battle the castle could not withstand the onslaught and was almost completely destroyed. It is believed that it was then that Nevytske Castle received its present appearance.
Чи є у Невицького замку легенди? / Does Nevytske Castle have legends?
Звичайно! Як і кожен замок в світі, Невицький також отримав декілька цікавих легенд, але я розповім про ті дві, котрі пам'ятаю ще з дитинства.
Of course! Like every castle in the world, Nevytske also received some interesting legends, but I will tell you about the two that I remember from childhood.
Одна із них розповідає історію про Погану Діву, яка, згідно з приданим, тут правила і наводила жах на всіх жителів. Кажуть, це була турецька царівна, зла чаклунка, яка побажала звести для себе на пагорбі найбільш неприступну фортецю. Для цього вона змушувала селян підіймати на гору важке каміння та додавати в розчин для зведення стін яйця і молоко, при цьому звичайного молока їй було мало і тому вона наказала відбирати його матерів через що почали вмирати маленькі діти. У той час в сусідньому селищі жив юнак, який пообіцяв стати царем і позбавити людей від злої царівни. Зібравши велике військо, він переміг Діву.
One of them tells the story of the Bad Virgin, who, according to the dowry, ruled here and terrified all the inhabitants. It is said that she was a Turkish princess, an evil witch who wanted to build the most impregnable fortress on the hill. To do this, she forced the peasants to lift heavy stones up the mountain and add eggs and milk to the mortar for the construction of the walls, while she had little ordinary milk and therefore she ordered to take away his mothers because of which small children began to die. At that time, a young man lived in a neighbouring village, who promised to become king and save people from the evil princess. Gathering a large army, he defeated the Virgin.
Ще одна легенда розповідає нам історію про одного із королів, котрі правили замком та його прекрасної доньки. Правитель вирішив видати дівчину за іншого короля щоб розширити свої володіння, але принцеса була закохана в місцевого юнака. Звичайно, їхньому шлюбу чи можливості бути разом заважав сам король та звичаї того часу, тому зрозумівши, що з коханим їй ніколи не бути принцеса вибралась на найвищу вежу та пригнула з неї. Кажуть, що після цього почалась жахлива гроза на території замку, котра і зруйнувала його залишивши тільки руїни.
Another legend tells the story of one of the kings who ruled the castle and his beautiful daughter. The ruler decided to marry the girl to another king to expand his possessions, but the princess was in love with a local young man. Of course, their marriage or the opportunity to be together was hindered by the king himself and the customs of the time, so realizing that she would never be with her lover, the princess climbed to the highest tower and bent down from it. It is said that after that a terrible storm began on the territory of the castle, which destroyed it, leaving only the ruins.
Що з Невицьким замком сьогодні? / What about Nevytske Castle today?
На жаль замок руйнується через брак фінансування та незацікавленість місцевої влади в порятунку важливого історичного об’єкту. Місцеві активісти, історики та просто небайдужі люди намагаються власними силами підтримувати споруду, проводять укріплення стін та археологічні дослідження, а також вимагають у влади виконувати обіцяні проекти реконструкції.
Unfortunately, the castle is collapsing due to lack of funding and the lack of interest of local authorities in saving an important historical site. Local activists, historians and ordinary people are trying to maintain the building on their own, fortify the walls and conduct archaeological research, and demand that the authorities carry out the promised reconstruction projects.
Але цього на жаль не вистачає, в ніч на 11 березня 2019 року після чергової грози автентичний дах Невицького замку просто обвалився і його звичний вигляд зруйнувався. Звичайно, нам обіцяють до кінця 2020 року відновити його і покращити загальний вигляд замку, але як це буде насправді ніхто не знає. Ну що ж, будемо чекати на позитивні зміни!
But this is unfortunately not enough, on the night of March 11, 2019, after another storm, the authentic roof of Nevytske Castle simply collapsed and its usual appearance collapsed. Of course, we are promised to restore it by the end of 2020 and improve the overall appearance of the castle, but no one really knows how it will be. Well, let's wait for positive changes!
