Long-form content or short-form content? Which shall you choose? ;-)

I can be a bit wordy at times. I don't think I'm boring, but my brain always follows multiple lines of thought at the same time, and they connect in interesting ways, but it's not always easy to express it to others adequately. I think the reason I enjoy writing so much is that it allows me to weave these different thought patterns together and show all the connections that I make while my brain keeps 5-10 tabs open at once.

When I am speaking, however, it's a whole lot more challenging. The listener has to have a lot of patience. I speak a lot slower than I could because if I am not careful I will lose you. I think in metaphors and those metaphors can be confusing for people who aren't expecting them, or when I introduce a new metaphor without adequately tying it in with previous ones, or distinguishing very clearly how I've made the jump from one topic to another.

THIS IS HARD WORK!

It's also why I really enjoy vlogging, but if you don't know my writing nor have a lot of free time, you may not continue. I can go on and on. I just have so many topics I want to explore. I am trying to learn to hone my attention on a single, easy-to-understand topic instead of just let my mind go wherever it wants to all the time. There is a time and place for both, but when I am talking to new people, or introducing ideas to people, it's important to be concise and to the point.

I like to speak without a script. It's good practice because most ideas I will want to say many times to different people, and having the camera and a potential audience to think about forces me to get good at speaking off the cuff.

I recently put up a video where I explain why I think bitcoin and crypto is so exciting, aside from the investing opportunities. I didn't plan on speaking for 20 minutes but it was a challenge to tie all these ideas together. In the end, despite having a lot of friends and acquaintances interested in this topic, it was the least feedback I ever received on a video.

Some people promised to watch, and I saw the numbers go up. @vincentnijman seemed to like it, but he is my biggest fan (as I am his). @empress-eremmy said what needed to be said!

"It is a bit longπŸ˜‰..."

Here's the thing. I LOVE long form video and audio content. Doesn't anyone else? I think there are a lot of people who enjoy long-form but there is something I am missing.

I can listen to 3 hour conversations between Joe Rogan or Lex Friedman and their guests. If you told me to listen to your friends 3 hour podcast...I'm not sure I would though. Why is that?

It's all about trust.

I already know that these guys have really interesting conversations with some interesting people, and so I don't hesitate to listen while I am stretching or checking crypto or on the train. I've listened to enough of them to know it's never boring. I've come accustomed to their style. It isn't always AMAZING, but at least I know the overall quality of conversation never dips too low.

Many people (even friends and acquaintances) haven't become accustomed to my style and aren't sure yet if I can offer something truly interesting every time. I don't have many people talking about me yet and so there isn't any network effect (which is how things tend to really pick up). I may be able to offer the same level of content as Joe Rogan....but you have no idea. Even if you know me, even if you like me, you don't know how I am going to present these ideas.

If I speak slowly and try to cover too many topics at once, I might lose you before you even see the value. You need a chance to start trusting me as a content creator.

The thing is, with my style, I try to offer knowledge and experience in ways that can benefit others without making it incredibly obvious. This post, for example, is essentially a post about how to write better content. I could have named it "3 ways to make better content NOW". Perhaps this would have gotten more clicks, but I am not seeking quantity, I'm seeking quality. Quality of comments, quality of collaborations, quality of support.

With writing, I think I've done pretty well! I may not get as big a payout as some other people, I have a few articles that flop, but I don't do too bad....and my comment section is one of the best at Hive and I love it! Some of you write essays to me and READING THEM KEEPS ME GOING. Not only can I get to know you better but I realize what I could talk about next time and this becomes a two way exchange, which is incredible.

It took a while to build the following with my articles, especially after a few absences, a bout or two of depression, and the drama that our community faced in 2018 and then again in 2020.

It will likely take a while to get that following with the videos too and I am still honing my craft, so that is to be expected. I can promise you though, I will pack everything I do with as much awesome as I can muster. I will do my best to move you and inspire you. That is what moves and inspires me.

I appreciate every single person who has watched my videos thus far. Thank you for being patient with me as I find my rhythm in this new project.

After the last video was a flop, I put up an attempt to expand the ideas I started sharing there, but faster and more to the point than the last time. I hope THIS one is one that you will want to share with your friends, and one that might convince them to come join us on Hive, and start building a life that is in harmony with the way the world is headed.

How do you feel about long-form content overall? Do you enjoy it?

I will likely be doing more but I want to earn your trust first ;-)
