Ah this is going to be awesome!!

Hopefully people will still have money to spend for vacations, when this little house is finished!

With the world as it is now, between the shit-storm of an economical crisis that is eminent, the crazy weather wrecking coastal areas, and farm crops, I think people will still want to escape their reality... We're tapping into a niche rental business, I believe will work very well considering our country's economical situation! While it may seem like something really bad is coming, the US is not nearly as bad off as other the majority of the world, and it looks like it will mostly stay above water. We still hold the world's reserve currency!

Anyhow, this niche I was talking about is in the realm of the whole off-grid movement. Living on a homestead and being off the grid is over-glorified, it's not for everyone, and it's hard. We did it for 3 years, in a travel trailer, and we could have kept going but we realized moving into a house nearby would be the key to building this homestead. Had we not moved into a proper house, we still wouldn't have the time we need to create our dream (which is no longer a dream really... it is now reality!).

While people talk great thing about living off-grid, most of them have never done it, and most of them never will. Here are some reasons why:

  1. It's a huge step to take.
  2. Proper off-grid systems take a lot of time to build, and they are pretty expensive initially.
  3. People do not leave their human comforts all that easily when they don't have to.

So what we're offering is for those daydreamers to satisfy their thirst with a taste of what an off-grid house feels like for a weekend. We will be operating the various systems that make the house run, such as making sure there's enough water for the entire stay, the solar panels are functioning properly, and there's enough chopped firewood close to the house for the cold nights.

Imagine sitting in a cozy little cottage with all the comforts of home, sipping on a warm cup of tea, looking out at the mountains, and realizing that you are in a home that is completely independent from the grid. You might even be doing this in a wood fired hot tub on the porch, sipping on a nice glass of wine... Whatever floats your boat!

If this works out right, as a special niche, there will be an enormous potential to scale this up and make some really good returns! I already have the land, so even if we spend $50k on building another one, we can make that back really fast.

Just crunching some numbers right now, at a low $150/night with a minimum stay of 2 nights, that's $300 a weekend. That makes $15,600 a year... take out 10% for vacancy ($1,560)... we're looking at $14,040. Or even better yet if we take out 20% for vacancy ($3,120)... we're looking at making $12,480 a year. That means our return on investment would take approximately 4 years!!!

I think we can build another cottage for about half that price... so far about $8000 has been spent, there's still a lot to go before it's a finished product, but we're nearing the half way point, both in terms of cost and labor. Once the outer shell is finished, it's all about making the off-grid systems work as we want them to work, and then we'll have to finish the interior. A lot of the materials have been upcycled so far, and my neighbor did the excavation work, so all that was much cheaper than it would have normally been. Labor so far has been mostly our own time and effort...

So far it's been done really well, and it will continue to be like that. My friend is a builder, it's been his thing for almost 20 years now! So he knows what he's doing, the only difference here is that it's very unconventional, there's a curve in the roof and it slopes in three different ways. That proved to be easier than we thought to do actually.

The roof will be covered with a waterproof membrane, and then about 12 inches of dirt to blend into the hill. There will be drainage that will direct rain water into a cistern that will be the main water source for the home. Like I said earlier, once that's done... it's sort of all about making this place as comfortable as possible, beautiful, and inviting!

The project is moving pretty fast, and I'm very happy about that!!! Passive income is on its way.
