Giving Thanks for cryptocurrency and decentralized finance this Thanksgiving.

As I read a post today about someones financial journey, I realized that during this Thanksgiving Season, that perhaps instead of giving thanks for an event which may have occurred 300 years ago, perhaps we should give thanks for something occurring now: cryptocurrency and decentralized finance.

A Financial development that puts investng into the realm of possibility for regular people.

  • I think we should be giving thanks for cryptocurrency because it offers regular people a chance to start investing while they are young and just starting out.
  • I think this is super important, because cryptocurrency allows regular working people to invest with very little money in solid investments.
  • For example even a minimal wage earner can buy a fraction of Ethereum or a few Satoshi of Bitcoin every payday.
  • And in the investing world, the most important thing is the amount of time you have been investing, which allows your investment to grow.

Time

  • We all wish we had bought Bitcoin when it was pennies, or Ethereum, two cryptocurrencies now valued in the hundreds or thousands of dollars.
  • And it''s easy to look at them and say I don't have a couple thousand to buy an Etherum or 14 thousand to buy some Bitcoin.
  • But in cryptocurrency you can buy what you can afford, when you can afford it.
  • A high schooler could buy a few bitcoin when it was under a dollar, or even half a Bitcoin if they were really broke.
  • And if you were a high schooler who bought a couple Bitcoin back in 2013 your Bitcoin would be very valuable now. Thats because of low price back then and time you held your investment.
  • But even now you can buy some Ethereum or some Bitcoin, but you just buy a smaller amount.
  • Now I can understand you saying, but I can only buy a little. I imagine the investors who didn't buy Bitcoin at 5 cents probably said the same thing when Bitcoin was 5 dollars. Now I can't buy as much as I could have if I bought at 5 cents. Thats okay, because the important thing is buy what you can, as early as you can, and hold on to it. Let time do it's magic.

Fractional Investments or Units

  • A common barrier to entry in the stock market is needing to buy a whole share. And one thing that RobinHood did to make stock investing popular was fraction shares, as in buying a fraction of a stock share if that's all you could afford.
  • For example if you wanted to buy Tesla at 100 dollars a share, but you couldn't afford a whole share, Robin Hood allowed you to buy half a share. Then you could buy the other half the next payday or the next month. Eventually you would own several shares, and when Tesla rose to 4000 dollars a share you would have earned a lot from your small investments: small units over time.
  • Cryptocurrency allows you to buy fractional shares of tokens. So you can start with very little investment capitol and take advantage of the power of time.
  • In fact, you can even buy Bitcoin today, because it's denominated in Satoshi and therefore even if you only have 50 dollars you can buy some. Cryptocurrency is revolutionary for this aspect of fractional shares, which allows you to get into the market and put time on your side.

Fancy investment strategies or Decentralized Finance

  • In addition to being thankful for fractional shares, I am also thankful for decentralized finance.
  • Because decentralized finance allows regular people, with small incomes, to take advantage of complex investment strategies like providing liquidity and earning trading fees like those huge exchanges. Or depositing assets in a bank and then borrowing against those assets to buy more assets as a strategy to increase the amount of the same assets, you control more assets, and thus you can profit more when their price rises.
  • These are just two examples of the many strategies that are normally reserved only for Rich Accredited Investors with net worths of one million dollars in the US.
  • Now with decentralized finance regular people who take the time to study decentralized finance will find some of these profitable strategies available to them, even with small investments.
  • Now make no mistake, if you don't do a good job of studying these investments you can lose a lot of money, but in reality people who don't study the stock market lose money all the time also.

Last Words

  • I think these three things are very important things to be thankful for this year.
  • And although the greed of the few, has led to the pain of the many this year, I still am thankful for cryptocurrency, and all the opportunities it provides.
  • Cryptocurrency and decentralized finance are truly gifts, and I am truly thankful for them, during this season of thanksgiving.
