Getting to Instead of Having to.

My manager at work is an awesome lady. There are many reasons I could point out to support my claim but fluffing her isn’t the point of this post.

The thing I do want to talk about is something that occurred to me as a result of something she does. She sings on payday. It’s a simple, one line tune that goes like this “I get to pay my biiiillllls todaaay!”

That’s when it dawned on me. I don’t have to pay my power bill. I’m totally free to sit around cold and in the dark. I don’t have to pay rent, car notes, water bills, internet bills, credit card bills, or even taxes for that matter (although that’s a different discussion). I get to pay for those things.

Now, I’m not here to say I make enough money at my job, or that everything above should be considered luxuries any of us could do without. I am here to say I’m luckier than some by having the resources to exchange for electricity.

There’s a lot that’s been written over the years about the power of positive thinking, and I’m not trying to get all new agey and weird but I think there’s something to it. After all, having to pay my bills is a bummer. Getting to pay them is awesome. It means I won that round of life and winning always puts me in a great mood.

Same thing goes with posting here. Is this a shit post? Maybe. Do I need to give a fuck? Nope. I have a job. I don’t need this to pay my bills. This is fun. It’s more fun when I get paid but it doesn’t matter if I don’t. So, again, I get to throw up a shit post and maybe earn something, but I don’t have to, and that’s one less thing to stress about.

States of mind are often self perpetuating. The phrase “your focus determines your reality” comes to mind. If you’re driving a car and just keep looking at the ditch instead of the road ahead you’re probably gonna end up in the ditch. Keep your eyes front and you get to enjoy the journey.
