Discounts and Scams [ENG-ESP]

Discounts and offers can be a double-edged sword. In many ways they help us save money, get more for less or reduce expenses, however, if we are not careful we can fall into fraudulent offers, unnecessary expenses or even get carried away by emotions and impulses without analyzing well the situation we are in. This is what happened to me over the weekend and I wanted to share my experience here so you can see how we can fall into a "trap" without realizing it, at the same time we are trying to take a promotion that is too good.

Los descuentos, las promociones y las ofertas pueden ser un arma de doble filo. En muchos sentidos nos ayudan a ahorrar dinero, a obtener más por menos o a disminuir los gastos, sin embargo, si no somos cuidadosos podemos caer en ofertas engañosas, gastos innecesarios o incluso dejarnos llevar por las emociones e impulsos sin analizar bien la situación ante la cual estamos. Esto último fue lo que me pasó el fin de semana y quise compartir mi experiencia por acá para que vean cómo podemos caer en una "trampa" sin darnos cuenta, al mismo tiempo que buscamos aprovechar una promoción demasiado buena.

A few days ago was the first VAT-free day of the year here in Colombia, and for that reason a store placed discounts of up to 50% on their products for two days. The truth is that I entered the application to buy some pills, but when I saw all the discounts I went crazy and started adding to the cart several products that maybe I didn't need right away but I knew I would soon run out so I would have to restock in a few weeks. For example, I found my Dry Shampoo literally half price (down to $5 from $10), and other products were 20 and 25% off. The truth is that I made a big purchase. The total was 225,000 Colombian pesos ($59) but with the discount on each product the total bill was 168,680 Colombian pesos, or $44. In other words, at the end of the purchase I would save approximately 15 dollars. It is worth noting that the cart had a total of 10 products, which were: hair shampoo, dry shampoo, 4-pack of ice cream, birth control pills, vitamin supplement, make-up remover wipes, sanitary napkins, hyaluronic acid night cream, face mask and hair mask.

Hace unos días fue el primer Día sin IVA del año acá en Colombia, y por ese motivo una tienda colocó descuentos hasta del 50% en sus productos durante dos días. La verdad es que entré a la aplicación para comprar unas pastillas, pero cuando vi todos los descuentos me volví loca y empecé a agregar al carrito varios productos que quizás no necesitaba de inmediato pero sabía que pronto se me iban a agotar así que tendría que reponerlo en unas semanas. Por ejemplo, encontré mi Shampoo en seco literalmente a mitad de precio (de 10 dólares bajó a 5$), y otros productos tenían descuentos del 20 y el 25%. La verdad es que hice una compra grande. El total fue de 225.000 pesos colombianos (59$) pero con el descuento que tenía cada producto el total de la cuenta fue de 168.680 pesos colombianos, es decir, 44 dólares. Es decir, al final de la compra me ahorraría 15 dólares aproximadamente. Cabe resaltar que en total el carrito tenía 10 productos, los cuales eran: shampoo de cabello, shampoo en seco, pack de 4 helados, pastillas anticonceptivas, suplemento vitamínico, toallitas desmaquillantes, toallas sanitarias, crema para la noche de ácido hialurónico, mascarilla para el rostro y mascarilla para el cabello.

I placed my order but it was raining all afternoon and I was also not very attentive to Whatsapp until the evening. When I checked my phone I realized that two people from the store had written me, one telling me that my order had been delayed because of the rains and because they couldn't get a delivery person, and the other person was writing me from the payment department. My husband had recommended me to cancel the order because of the time and the rains, but it seemed to me that all the offers I had taken were incredible so I did not want to lose the opportunity and decided to continue with the purchase process, then I wrote to the second person, from the payment department. This person told me that they no longer accepted the payment method that I had placed in the application (cash in person) and that the payment method could be through a virtual transfer, if I did it this way I would have a discount and the bill would be 148,900 Colombian pesos, that is, the bill would be $ 39, I would save $ 5 more dollars in addition to the discounts that I had already taken.

Hice mi pedido pero toda la tarde estuvo lloviendo y tampoco estuve muy atenta al Whatsapp hasta la noche. Cuando revisé el teléfono me di cuenta que me habían escrito dos personas de la tienda, una indicándome que mi orden se había retrasado por las lluvias y porque no conseguían repartidor, y la otra persona me escribía desde el departamento de pagos. Mi esposo me había recomendado que por la hora y por las lluvias cancelara el pedido, pero a mi me pareció que todas las ofertas que había tomado estaban increíbles así que no quería perder la oportunidad y decidí continuar con el proceso de compra, entonces le escribí a la segunda persona, del departamento de pagos. Esta persona me indicó que ya no aceptaban el método de pago que yo había colocado en la aplicación (pago en efectivo contraentrega) y que la forma de pago podría ser a través de una transferencia virtual, si lo hacía de esta forma tendría un descuento y la cuenta me quedaría en 148.900 pesos colombianos, es decir, la cuenta quedaría en 39 dólares, me ahorraría 5 dólares más a parte de los descuentos que ya había aprovechado.

Here was the problem. My mind at this point stopped thinking rationally. I only considered the fact that in total I would save $20 and I would be carrying too many products. My husband hesitated, but I said "How do I know it's a scam? They are writing me from the store, I will make the payment." The thought of that person being a scammer went in and out of my head immediately, I got carried away with the excitement of saving and having at low cost many products I needed.

Aquí estuvo el problema. Mi mente en este punto dejó de pensar racionalmente. Solo consideré el hecho de que en total me ahorraría 20 dólares y estaría llevando demasiados productos. Mi esposo dudó, pero yo le dije "¿Cómo saber que es una estafa? Me están escribiendo de la tienda, haré el pago". La idea de que fuera un estafador entró y salió de mi cabeza de inmediato, me dejé llevar por la emoción de ahorrar y tener a bajo costo muchos productos que necesitaba.

At that point I received another call from a third person from the company telling me that my order had been postponed until tomorrow. I told her that it was fine, and that I would already make the transfer virtually through NEQUI because a person from the store had written me before and then the girl on the call told me that they did not use that payment method. In other words, the person who wrote me "from the payment department" had my data and was looking to scam me.

En ese momento recibí otra llamada de una tercera persona de la compañía indicándome que mi pedido se había rodado para el día de mañana. Le dije que estaba bien, y que ya haría la transferencia de forma virtual a través de NEQUI porque me había escrito antes una persona de la tienda y me dijo que no manejaban ese medio de pago. Es decir, la persona que me escribió "del departamento de pagos" tenía mis datos y buscaba estafarme.

By that time three people had already written me by whatsapp, a fourth phone number was the one who had called me, and I honestly did not know if I was being scammed by only one person, or by several. I decided to cancel the order and block all the numbers, I no longer knew who to trust and I was left with the bad taste of feeling that I had almost lost 39 dollars. Among so many discounts I did not notice all the signs that indicated that it was a scam, especially the discount at the end. That was how an excellent offer was about to be a robbery for me, and I was going to succumb completely because at that point I did not analyze the situation very well, I got carried away.

Para ese momento ya me habían escrito tres personas por whatsapp, un cuarto número de teléfono era el que me había llamado, y yo sinceramente ya no sabía si estaba siendo estafada solo por una persona, o por varias. Decidí cancelar el pedido y bloquear todos los números, ya no sabía en quien confiar y me quedaba el mal sabor de sentir que por poco perdía 39 dólares. Entre tantos descuentos y promociones no me di cuenta de todas las señales que indicaban que era una estafa, sobre todo el descuento el final. Así fue como una excelente promoción estuvo a punto de ser un robo para mí, y yo iba a caer completamente porque en ese punto no analicé muy bien la situación, me dejé llevar.

One wonders how people can fall for scams, how they can be robbed without guns. It happens because scammers work with emotions and impulses. I consider myself a very suspicious person in the street, but it almost happened to me.

Uno se pregunta cómo la gente puede caer en estafas, cómo pueden ser robadas sin armas, solo a través de la palabra. Sucede porque los estafadores trabajan con las emociones y los impulsos. Yo que me considero una persona súper desconfiada en la calle pero igualmente por poco me sucede a mí.

What happened to me shows the overconfidence I was having in my last purchases. The last few months I have reached so many agreements with sellers, I have bought in different stores and as everything had gone well I decreased my state of caution and alertness. Now with what I experienced, I am once again more attentive to the purchases I make, because there are bad people everywhere.

Esto que me ocurrió demuestra el exceso de confianza que estaba teniendo en mis últimas compras. Los últimos meses he llegado a tantos acuerdos con vendedores, he comprado en distintas tiendas y como todo había salido bien disminuí mi estado de precaución y alerta. Ahora con esto que viví vuelvo a estar más atenta de las compras que realice, pues gente mala hay en todos lados.
