What's Going On, BROs? - Revisiting Bro-Fi After Half a Year

It's been exactly six months since I published my hold-your-hand walk-through, relating my first experience with Bro-Fi, and explaining the steps of delegating Hive Engine tokens on this intra-brockchain de-fi tool. As you can probably tell, I was quite psyched about it, not so much for its great financial prospects, but merely about the fact that now you could do decentralized finance with your second-tier Hive tokens. Sure, the payout may be in some obscure currency without much value, but hey, anything counts, right? Well... after half a year I am not so sure any more. But let's take a look at the results since then.

Bro, Check Out My 1.7 BRO!

Back in April I thought I'd take a head-dive into Bro-Fi, and so I delegated a substantial sum of various tokens to @brofi. In most cases it was (close to) all of my holding. That meant, my upvote on posts from their corresponding tribes would be reduced to (close to) zero, but in return I would get payed a bunch of BROs, right? Well, sort of. Over the course of six months, I managed to earn 1.7 BRO in total, which is about $9 USD. It's more than I thought it would be worth, but I'm not entirely sure if it was a good investment. In the meantime I kept posting and upvoting in those tribes (some more, some less), and thus managed to accumulate a nice amount their tokens (or not). Here is the complete breakdown:

  • 1000 PAL - earned back about 15%
  • 3000 NEOXAG - earned back about 25%
  • 2000 LOTUS - earned back about 2% (though admittedly, I haven't published anything natural medicine related posts)
  • 2000 CCC - earned back about 6.5%
  • 1000 FOODIE - earned back about 8%
  • 50 POB - earned back more than 200%
  • 80 CINE - earned back 375%

This shows us a bunch of interesting things. For example, as the general tokens go, NEOXAG seems to be paying much more than PAL. I keep using both tags to fill leftover spaces, if I have not used up all ten tags. But that's about it, I never browse their communities, and when upvoting posts I don't pay these tags any mind.

While LOTUS is something I clearly am missing out on (despite regularly upvoting natural medicine posts), CCC and FOODIE are two tags I keep using. The huge difference is, that I post a CCC post about once a week, but I there were no more than a handful of FOODIE posts I published in the last six months. Still, I got more FOODIE tokens (though they are worth 75 cents, while my CCC is over six dollars).

Finally, it is the new-but-still-hot tokens that have had the best rewards. POB seems to be a powerful tribe, and CINE (brought to you by the same folks as BRO - I think) just surpasses all expectations. Of course, I should not ignore my successful series of posts Binge on This.

What Steps to Take Now?

My above reasonings are not entirely flawless, of course. There are so many factors to consider, from the value of each token to how much Bro-Fi values them, meaning how much they are willing to pay for using them for di-fi. If I remember right, at first I also delegated all my BUILD tokens, but the next day I undelegated them right back. There was really no point in it, as it barely paid me anything.

So learning from this, I have already undelegated all my LOTUS tokens. I might as well make use of them myself, by upvoting natural medicine articles, posted by people I follow. I did the same with my PAL tokens, since it is not very high on Bro-Fi's list of rewarded tokens. My CCC I split into two halves, one of which I left delegated, the other one I took back. The opposite thing goes for POB and CINE: Since I have way more of these tokens than I had when I first delegated to Bro-Fi, I decided to delegate more of it: In the case of POB I doubled it to 100, staking the other 100 on my own. My liquid CINE tokens I also staked, and increased my delegation of 80 to 200, leaving me with more than 500 staked tokens for future upvotes.

Nothing is Definite!

So what does this all mean then? Not too much, I would say. Simply, that I think for myself I may want to change the approach I am taking with Bro-Fo. Not completely, just adjust it a bit. After all, there is really no reason why I should be ripping on the BROs. Nine bucks in half a year, after all, is ... just that much. No Splinterlands by any means, but literally nothing to scoff at, but ... Would a bank have given me more? (Just kidding! We all know that most banks would have charged me a fee for the privilege of letting them use my money. Right!) So I am going to keep on using Bro-Fi, just perhaps not as intensively as before. And then I'll check back in another six months. By then I may have gained another BRO... or not. We'll see.
