Introduction

Today's featured coin is the 1oz Silver 2016 Australian Kookaburra coin struck by the Perth Mint. A coin design type that I have not posted about yet is the coloured silver coin. The 2016 1oz Australian Kookaburra was also issued in the coloured coin design, see the comparison image below.

I am not a huge coloured coin fan, if given a choice I'd choose the standard bullion silver coin instead, however there is a dedicated fan base for the coloured coins. Although they are not my preference, silver is silver and for the right price I definitely do pick up the odd coloured coin here and there.

A few months ago, I walked into my local post shop and saw the 2016 Lunar Monkey four coin typset in their display cabinet. The price was still the original issue price from 2016, so it was a no brainer for me to buy the set. The coin set includes the proof, gilded, coloured and bullion versions of the 2016 Lunar Monkey coin designs. So you see sometimes I do buy coloured coins. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Stay tuned for a future post about the 2016 Lunar Monkey coin, it will be part of my lunar coin series of posts. I will also show photos of my four coin typeset in that post.

The maximum mintage of the Australian Kookaburra bullion coin was 500,000 and the coin issue was SOLD OUT. The coin was issued as legal tender under the authority of Australia with a denomination of one dollar. The other bullion coin sizes issued in 2016 were the 10oz and the 1kg coins. The table below shows the maximum mintage and declared mintage totals.

From the year 1990 until the 2018 edition the coins were .999 fine silver, the recent editions of the coins have increased their purity to .9999 silver.

5oz High Relief Coin

The reverse of the coin depicts a Kookaburra perched on a fence post with barbed wire fencing, amidst an Australian landscape. The high relief finish is very impressive with the thick milled sides and deep etched design of these coins. The design includes an inscription 'Australian Kookaburra', the 'P' mintmark, and the year 2016.

The obverse of the coin portrays the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the denomination of Australian 8 Dollars.

The Silver 2016 Australian Kookaburra 5oz High Relief coin comes in a claim shell display case, with an illustrated outer box and an accompanying certificate of authenticity. No more than 1,000 5oz high relief coins were released with the display case, certificate of authenticity and outer box packaging.

The 5oz High Relief coin is very special coin, the deep design on the coin absolutely pops on this size of coin. I will do a future post where I share some photos of the high relief 5oz coins I have in my stack. They cost a pretty penny, but having one or two in your stack is worthwhile if you truly appreciate silver and the beauty of quality coin design.

Coin Purchase Quantity

The Australian Kookaburra 1oz coins are sold as single coins, in sealed rolls of twenty 1oz coins or you can purchase a 100oz box that includes five sealed rolls of twenty 1oz coins. The advantage of buying in higher quantities is that the bullion dealers offer volume breaks or discounts the more coins you buy.

Coin Display

There are many options on how best to store and display your Australian Kookaburra 1oz coin collection. One great option is to purchase a purpose built presentation box. There are different varieties out there, but the one in the photo below holds up to twenty 1oz Silver Kookaburra coins. The black velour-lined tray is designed to fit 1oz Silver Kookaburra coins in their original mint capsules.

Coin Protection

Each 1oz Silver Kookaburra coin is stored in their original mint plastic capsules. It is highly recommended that you keep your silver bullion coins in their capsules to prevent tarnishing of the coin. If the original plastic capsule gets scratched, damaged or cracks, you can buy new plastic capsules from your trusted bullion dealer.

When handling your 1oz Silver Kookaburra coins, for extra protection use a pair of cotton gloves. Cotton gloves protect your silver coins from oils in your fingers that may cause discoloration, damaging the finish of the coin. I have formed the habit to use cotton gloves even when I am handling silver coins in their plastic capsules.
