There was a new tribe announced yesterday and I am very happy to see it even though the topic is not my thing.

What makes this tribe exciting is that it is in an area where there is extreme passion. This is something that gets people's going and keeps bringing them back. While there is the potential for many hurt feelings, moderated properly, it could be of great impact.

The new tribe is called TalkingPoint. The focus is politics, news, and current events.

Naturally, it is the first category that gets people going. We live in a world that is very divided politically, at least in the Western countries. The United States, Britain, and France all see major splits in the stance people are taking. The level of discourse is also increasing greatly.

While there are times where individuals (or groups) take things to far, at the core of this is passion. People believe their views and seek to defend them. This is a commendable thing. On Steem, we should be welcoming of this as evidenced by the emergence of 3speak.

A tribe that focuses upon relevant topics can start the process of creating a new level of engagement that is not seen on Steem. We regularly see situations arise that strike people emotionally. These are the exact topics that get engagement on social media. The situation in Hong Kong is a prime example.

Of course, this is straying into an area that is a minefield. Many have pointed out how flag wars took place in the past; this is a tribe that is ripe for that. I can only hope people go after those who take an approach that is unacceptable as opposed to going after individuals for differing points of view.

What is encouraging is the main tribe account is going to take this approach. At least the example will be set by those moderating the activity.

Hopefully there will be a lot of interesting debate coming out of this tribe. It is focused on a subject areas that are important and do require discussion. Being able to exchange ideas, even about subjects passionate about, is crucial to freedom.

Naturally, there is a lot more relevant out there besides politics and I can see this as a place to converge on those important topics. Not all the news is political and there are many things occurring which are worthy of discussion and focus. Subjects such as human trafficking, pollution, opioid crisis, and income inequality are all subjects that need more attention and ideas.

Another aspect to this is the team behind the project is already thinking in terms of a DAO. According to a Short Paper, of the 20 million POINT tokens, 10 million will be held for the DAO in the future.

Creating communities/tribes that are owned by the stakeholders is the new business structure in my view. We should seek to expand this idea to whatever projects we can. Individual ownership, whether by one or a select few, is what caused a great deal of the economic problems we are presently confronting. DAOs provide anyone with the opportunity to get involved and amass some stake. On Steem, this can be done via purchase or through one's activities. The later is something I see as very important.

Ultimately, the success of this tribe, like most of them, is going to depend upon the ability to reach outside of Steem and get others involved. While we saw a number of successful tribes, ultimately we saw nothing more than than a splitting up of the existing community. Granted, this was needed since tribes do help up to categorize and locate information we are interested in. However, the overall growth was minimal (if there was any at all).

Nevertheless, a tribe that strikes such an emotional chord with people could be helpful in getting non-steemians involved. I mean, what is more attractive than getting rewarded for expressing views about subjects one is extremely passionate about?

Time will tell the impact this tribe has on the overall Steem ecosystem. Nevertheless, it is good to see the offering we have on Steem expanding. In the end, I feel it all will have an impact since it only helps to make our community grow.

In fact, in writing this, I know a couple people I approached about Steem in the past who weren't totally interested yet are very political. This is something that I can bring to them and see if this strikes closer to home.

The larger out offering, the more things for people to get interested in.
