For all the technological advancements that we made, we are still living in a 2D world. Our entry into the digital world is based upon us looking at a screen. Whether it is our laptops, phones, or PCs, we are accustomed to looking at something 2 dimensional.

When this will change is anyone's guess. Some are estimating that it could come as soon as 2023.

Ever since Google introduced "Google Glass", people tried to figure out alternate ways to access information without entering the flatscreen world. The promise of augmented reality is too great to pass up. Thus far, in spite of the prospects, it has not materialized.

One of the grand promises of Web 3.0 is an internet that is ubiquitous. We are going to see "smart" everything meaning a digital overlay of our physical world will be taking place. How we access this still needs to be worked out.

The race is worth a lot of money. There are billions on the line. Companies are all trying to be in position to leverage the new platform. This will not only include the hardware but also, potentially, the operating system that is what allows us to access the world around us.

For now, we are plugging along with smartphones. The last few years saw little advancement in the way of technology on this front. It is as if the entire industry is waiting for something new to breakthrough.

Here are some of the challenges that are presented as standing in the way.

Much of what is awaiting development is the hardware. However, we cannot overlook the communication system. A lot of bandwidth will be required to make these systems work. Thus, the present development of next generation communication systems will also play a major factor.

A/R is going to make us all a lot smarter. Over time, we will have access to information right when we need it. Couple this with AI and we can see how the "system" will know what information is required at the precise moment.

Whether this will end up being in the form of glasses, headsets, or even contract lens remains to be seen. As we see, there are many companies trying to uncover the secrets which will bring up closer to this realm.

For now, we are still stuck looking at our flat screens. The move to 3D is still eluding us.
