We certainly know how to make the most of technological progress.

While the UN is declaring that the first kill happened by an AI controlled drone, we now see the world of VR about to get pushed to a new level. No, this is not something that is going to be an exciting new step forward. Instead, it is basically more of the same.

Facebook, the company that makes the Oculus headsets, said that it is now going to start putting ads in the VR environments. This should come as no surprise since this is how the company makes its money.

However, this is exactly why we need to resist dealing with a company of this nature. They are always going to turn to the same tricks. It is Web 2.0 all over again.

As I stated in the past, there is no way these corporations have a prayer of moving to Web 3.0. Their business model will not allow for it. They generate revenues from advertising and Wall Street will not allow them off the hook. Anything that threatens that is going to be squashed in favor of revenue growth.

It is also in this manner that we see the users at odds with the company. Advertising penetrating our virtual experience is not likely at the top of the list for most people. If you ask them what they look forward to with the transition to VR, few will answer "more advertising".

This epitomizes the mindset of the present establishment. All technological advancements are run through the prism of killing more efficiently, pushing more advertising, or enlarging the surveillance. That is what the main focus continues to be.

Unfortunately, it will continue until people stand up and decide they had enough. This is going to mean opting out of a lot of these technologies. The shift toward Web 3.0 could help that a great deal.

Sadly, we see this same thing in the blockchain world. Even on Hive, how often are tribes putting up adds as a way to enhance the value of their token. Instead of focusing upon the user experience, and building out a larger network, the easy approach is to toss up some ads to push for token buys.

You would think that the idea of using it for more marketing to bring in other users would at least appeal to the user base more since that will add to the value of the token.

Either way, until innovation comes to this arena, Web 3.0 is starting to look a lot like Web 2.0/ There is a difference in that it is not Wall Street benefiting. Nevertheless, we will fail to capture the masses unless we bring true innovation to the table.

The same holds true for the VR world. The behavior of Facebook is all too well known. Their actions are being undertaken with the intention of controlling the platform just like they do now.. As they say a leopard will not change its spots.

Web 3.0 is about a break from the past. This is an entirely new Internet we are building, one that will eventually be ubiquitous and spatial. It is something that is going to elevate this to an entirely new level.

As our different "worlds" combine, the opportunities are going to be enormous. A company like Facebook is well area of what is taking place. They know this is a step into the future that is going to be huge. Mixed reality is going to be a money maker for many, amounting to tens of trillions of dollars worth business.

Facebook is intent on getting their share of the pie. At this point, they are going to the same playbook that worked for more than a decade. And why wouldn't they? It has resulted in a market cap into the hundreds of billions of dollars.

Say what you will about Zuckerberg, he is not stupid. He understands where things are heading and is positioning Facebook right in the path. Unfortunately, the power of technology in the hands of someone like this is not a pathway to freedom. As we can see, just more of the same out of the largest social media company, at least by users.

They are a company that is going for first mover advantage. It is something we all have to be mindful of going forward.
