Crypto gaming dapps: an average user review

I'll preface this by saying that a) I've been playing this games for about two weeks now and b) I play mostly on my very normal Samsung smartphone. I do play some of this games on an entry level Lenovo laptop, but what I want you to note is that I'm -still- a poor man.

I'm a lazy man too. And I'm looking -as most of you are- for that lovely Financial Freedom. I already spend a lot of time just playing so why not try to monetize it?

I've been into crypto since summer 2017. I never really had a big fat amount of money to invest but I tried anyway. Some really intense months were followed by way slower times and I basically forgot about everything crypto. But I came back some months ago, and some weeks ago I discovered the wonderful world of dapps.

I signed up to Hive and Wax and my journey began. These are the games I've been playing and I'm reviewing them from a gamer point of view: I'm judging the playability, graphics, sounds -the games themselves-, not how profitable they are or any other pure crypto aspects of the games.

Most of the links (at the end of each game's comment) are affiliate links and, in most cases, that benefit both of us through different boosts and rewards. Non-affiliate links are easily obtainable anyway. Most of the images are screenshots I took from my own devices. Otherwise I will credit the original author.

Wax Tycoon

A cute, easy to join and to play, free to play and play to earn (sorry about that) business tycoon on the Wax platform where your goal is to earn as much money per second as you can. The top 20 players get then rewarded in diamonds that they can swap for another cryptocurrencies.

The game starts entertainingly enough but after a few days it starts slowing down massively. You need more money every time you want to upgrade or launch any business but I see that as a plus now so I can focus on more time consuming projects.

Overall, I like it.

Splinterlands

Now this is one of the two or three really ambitious projects out there. Important part of the Hive ecosystem, it can be played both on mobile or computer and it features a growing lore, an expanding card collection in the form of NFTs and an involved community willing to help (a pleasantly common thing in this kind of spaces).

As you can see, I cannot progress to the next rank because I have to buy a $10 spellbook to unlock all the features and, as I stated before, I'm -still- a poor man and I want my cryptothings to be, at least, self sustainable. So I cannot really say much more about this. The playability is really good: you choose a god as your leader and then up to six cards from that god's faction and the neutral cards pool, and set them up in the battlefield. Placement is really important as the minions attack in a predefined order and depending of their speed, so you really need to think your strategy knowing how much you can spend.

I will buy the spellbook. I see myself playing this for a long time, being an avid player of Hearthstone, MTG or LoR.

Holybread.io

Another Hive project, this time browser based, is holybread. It's a slow paced, time based RPG where you start with one character that will fight in the arena and go into quests to find equipment and earn experience and money to level up and unlock new partners for your adventures. You can fight every 15 minutes and quests can take between 5 and 15 minutes.

Not a bad project, I like it.

Human History

A cool cartoonish looking game about a hunter/gatherer in the earlier stages of human evolution. You need to hunt so you can eat and gain weight, which is the main quest I'm in now. You can work in different trades too but everything takes time, and you have to manage that resource as well as your "money".

I don't feel like I'm really progressing and the tasks can take between one and eight hours, so it's not a fast paced experience by any means but I keep playing it anyway.

Again, a Hive project (still three to go).

Neon district

A cyberpunk themed game about delivering and intercepting deliveries with your teams of skilled mercenaries to earn money to reinvest it in weapons and armor.

A really slow -almost idle- game, as shifts last easily eight hours, so not a time demanding app.

I rally like it.

Crypto Brew Master

A brewery simulator. You need to perform tasks at the tavern to get ingredients or you can buy them from the game market or from other users. You can upgrade your equipment, hire lands and get new recipes and more importantly you can brew your own beer that you can sell or consume for a boost of "energy points" (that you consume doing tasks in the tavern).

I like it but it's a bit hard for me.

Dogeland

Hey, the first one in a while that is not a Hive dapp!

It's an idle game someone spammed me on discord but it's free Doge. I think you just need to log in daily and that's it. Obviously you can invest in better workers and land and earn much more but, again, I have no money.

Sorare.com

Now this one hurts in a personal level. This is a game I know. This is about one of the things I love the most. Football. Football cards! Just like Fut21! But with crypto!

The only thing blocking me from going further in this game is the need to buy a card to unlock the rest of the features. Again, when I can afford it, I will do it.

Upland

I absolutely love this app. It allows you to buy and sell depictions of real life real estate in the blockchain. It's insanely addictive and the community is pure love.

It's the only game in which I have invested money (£4.69) so far and I don't regret it at all.

They have a beginner protection system that allows people from the lowest ranks to buy specifically released items at a highly reduced price. When you reach the second level (and this is where my £4.69 went) you can sell them to other players and make some juicy profits.

I sit now at 13 properties at lovely Fresno (there are 4 American cities available but they plan to keep expanding its reach) and I'll try to invest and hold as there will be -it's at closed beta now I think- a way to sell them for real money.

Lost Relics

A nice looking, isometric Diablo-like computer RPG that runs smoothly. Perfectly playable yet still in an early stage of development, is one of the games with the brightest future.

I played two or three more games but I found them impractical, unplayable or plainly boring.

I will keep you informed of my progressions and achievements.

Do you miss any game? Should I be playing something I didn't mention? Drop me a line in the comments and let me know!
