Apple May Be Forced To Allow External IOS Apps

Apple is known for its walled garden ecosystem, which has also been called by some, a monopoly in some ways. This has caused issues a lot of in the past with many different developers, not just in the cryptocurrency industry. There have been numerous development teams that have been to war with Apple and their 30% cut of payments and transactions that happen on applications downloaded from the App Store.

I have my love/hate relationship with Apple. As a former employee of Apple that has dealt with customers on both sides of the app, I am happy to see that they are finally being forced to open up iOS to external applications. In a recent Bloomberg report, Apple is planning on opening up the iPhone and iPad operating system to external, or side-loaded applications that do not pass through their App Store.

What Does This Mean For Crypto

Crypto app developers have had a horrible time in recent history trying to get applications listed on Apple's App Store. If you app is listed on the store, it has to pass through Apple's strict guidelines and also use their internal payment system, in which they take a sizable cut.

This has caused a huge wave of issues with the crypto and NFT industries as Apple wants a cut of not just the transaction, but also gas fees. But since EU regulations have since changed, Apple is looking at having to open up their ecosystem to give developers the ability to use their own payment systems or external systems, ie, blockchain.

Apple is currently considering whether or not to allow external applications to use their internal systems, but with blockchain, developers have their own payment rails, so their systems will no longer be needed. In other words, they don't get their cut!

Apple Being Pressed To Open Up in US As Well

In 2021, Epic Games successfully sued Apple over the payment system monopoly because they blocked the popular Fortnite game over the addition of their own payment system. This caused a huge stir in the industry and has led to where we are now.

Epic's CEO, Tim Sweeney took to Twitter to say that the US needs to implement a similar system to the EU and calls on congress to pass the Open Apps Market Act.

If the US does not follow suit with the EU on a move like this, it would seriously hurt US based app developers and possibly drive more innovation away from the US due to corrupt regulatory landscapes.

Tim Cook Is For Pleasing Stockholders Not Users

Since the death of Steve Jobs, Apple has gone from an innovative technology company to a banker-led consumer products and services company that is all about extracting every dollar out of their user and developer base as possible so they can build more silly-looking buildings that they do not need and grossly overpay executives while underpaying their over-worked employees.

I know that Tim his hating this decision of having to give up the reigns of the little monopoly that he has built with the App Store. But, this couldn't be better news for developers, not just in the crypto industry, but also gaming, metaverse, etc.

I see this as a huge win for not just the big players but also for smaller independent app developers everywhere!

US Citizens need to contact their representatives and call on them to pass the Open App Markets App so that we can free the apps and payments from the greedy grasps of the Apple executives!
