All the enthusiasm about 10% interest earned from Hive Based Dollar, HBD, is not showing in the market capitalization numbers. HBD typically runs in the $4 Million range, which it has done for months except for the occasional rise. The highest market cap for HBD this year was back on April 1st at $11,055,734.

Otherwise, the market cap for HBD tends to hover a bit over $4 Million with the occasional spike. So, what's going on?

It is possible that Coingecko has faulty data on the market cap of HBD. But, if it doesn't, then it is very telling that what we imagined is a great thing for HBD isn't actually happening. If the market cap isn't rising, then 10% interest is not providing any stability in the peg. Something else is providing the stability. One would expect that more Hivers would be piling in their HBD to earn interest, otherwise. It's just not happening.

Stocks and Bonds

The thing is that I am seeing HIVE as somewhat analogous to an equity. It may not pay a dividend. But, it does pay inflation. In any case, I am seeing HBD as more of a bond. HBD provides reliable returns.

Well, I am looking at HBD as my preferred vehicle for savings. Hive has tremendous potential for growth. But, for me, it requires too much time to get the high ROI. My job simply does not provide me the luxury of spending hours and hours blogging, curating, and commenting. I get better returns from leasing Hive Power and from saving HBD.

This is why I was looking at the market cap of HBD. I expected that with the recent hard fork that we would see a rise in the amount of HBD. Again, maybe Coingecko is inaccurate. But, if it turns out to be true data, it concerns me that more people aren't saving. It has been all talk. I hope I'm wrong.

Just to wrap this up, 10% should set the bar on what your Hive account should be yielding. If you can do better, keep up the good work. If you are yielding less than 10%, perhaps you maybe better off leasing or putting your earnings into HBD savings.
