Although studying in Argentina is public and free, there are also a few expenses to consider that could be affected by inflation in our country.
Si bien estudiar en Argentina es público y gratuito, también hay que considerar algunos cuantos gastos que podrían verse afectados por la inflación de nuestro país.
As many of you may know and others not so much, we have an inflation rate that exceeds year after year, negatively impacting our purchasing power. What you could buy in previous years is not the same as it is today. This makes you think that your money is not worth it. And this is not an impression but a reality. These last years have been very hard and far from changing.
Como muchos sabrán y otros no tanto, tenemos una inflación que se supera año tras año impactando negativamente en nuestro poder adquisitivo. Lo que podías comprar años anteriores no es lo mismo que en la actualidad. Lo que hace a uno pensar que su plata no vale. Y no es una impresión sino una realidad. Estos últimos años han sido muy duros y lejos está de cambiar.
The onset of the pandemic brought with it big changes in the prices of certain student products. Especially those that are necessary to lead the new life that quarantine forces us to endure. In order to simulate being present at the university, most of them had to resort to equip themselves with a webcam and carry out their classes through the Internet. Merchants have seen an opportunity due to the great demand in this emergency situation and the prices of the most needed products have grown exponentially becoming almost a luxury.
El inicio de la pandemia trajo consigo grandes cambios en los precios de ciertos productos estudiantiles. Sobre todo los que son necesarios para llevar la nueva vida que la cuarentena nos obliga soportar. Para simular la presencialidad en la universidad la mayoría tuvo que recurrir a equiparse con una cámara web y llevar a cabo sus clases a través de internet. Los comerciantes han visto una oportunidad debido a la gran demanda en esta situación de emergencia y los precios de los productos más necesitados han crecido exponencialmente convirtiéndose casi en un lujo.
I was lucky enough to have taken a picture of a webcam promotion before the pandemic. First of all I should clarify that the following prices are in Argentine pesos. The promotion was $375 before the pandemic. Today it is $5299. But that is nothing when compared to the time when import restrictions had started and products did not enter or if they did they were scarce and therefore very expensive. A webcam at that time was worth more than $25000, even reaching $40000.

La promoción era de $375 antes de la pandemia. Hoy está en $5299. Pero eso no es nada al compararlo al momento en que habían comenzado las restricciones en las importaciones y no entraban los productos o si lo hacían eran escasos y por lo tanto muy caros. Una cámara web en ese momento llegó a valer más de $25000, llegando incluso a los $40000.

One of the most important things a student should have is a calculator. It makes even more sense if the student is an engineering student. It is the student's most faithful tool and it is something I was able to buy at the time. It had cost me about $950, today the price goes up to $2700. Obviously we are talking about the most basic calculator. If I wanted to buy one of the ones I prefer, I would have to consider shelling out a larger amount of money. Although we understand that we always talk about investment when we spend money on something that will be useful, above all, it will be our friend tool for many years.

Es la herramienta más fiel del estudiante y es algo que pude comprar en su momento. Me había costado unos $950, hoy el precio asciende hasta los $2700. Obviamente estamos hablando de la calculadora más básica. Si quisiera comprar una de las que prefiero, tendría que considerar desembolsar una cantidad mayor de dinero. Aunque entendemos que siempre hablamos de inversión cuando gastamos dinero en algo que le daremos utilidad, sobre todo, será nuestra herramienta amiga por muchos años.

And if we talk about notebooks and pens to take notes and make notes, they also increased their value exponentially. I remember being able to bring up to 3 notebooks and a few pens with $500. Today a single notebook costs about $250, so it is now necessary to carry between $800 and $1000 in your pocket to bring the same. The price of the lecture notes has also increased over time although they are not so necessary now, that is, the classes are virtual because we do not have the possibility of taking them in person at the university.
Y si hablamos de cuadernos y lapiceras para tomar notas y hacer apuntes, también aumentaron su valor exponencialmente. Recuerdo poder traerme hasta 3 cuadernos y unas cuantas lapiceras con $500. Hoy un solo cuaderno vale aproximadamente $250, así que es necesario ahora llevar en tu bolsillo entre $800 y $1000 para traerte lo mismo. El precio de los apuntes de la cátedra también aumentó con el paso del tiempo aunque ahora no son tan necesarios, es decir, las clases son virtuales porque no tenemos la posibilidad de cursar en forma presencial en la universidad.

El viaje en autobus siempre fue subiendo estando o no en pandemia. Desde los $3.50 pasó en unos años a $20. Por esta razón el gobierno aumentó la capacidad negativa de la tarjeta SUBE que es la que usamos para viajar. En un primer momento podías tener saldo negativo hasta los $10, ahora lo han aumentado hasta los $50. Supongo que es por el caso de personas que toman más de un bus para viajar a cierto lugar.
At the university we have a dining room and a buffet. They try to keep the prices more or less the same so that it is accessible to everyone. From time to time the university itself comes to the students to invite them to get a credential to have benefits such as discounts on the purchase of notes and other things. On that side I think it is very good. We also have the possibility of getting a student ticket to pay less for the bus trip. Another interesting thing is that the best students, those who manage to pass a certain number of subjects during the year, can apply for a scholarship. It is designed for those who have socio-economic problems and want and wish to continue studying the career they have chosen. Many people come from far away places and face problems that must be taken into account. For that reason, it is a great help.
En la universidad disponemos de un comedor y un buffet. Más o menos los precios los intentan mantener para que sea accesible para todos. Cada tanto la misma universidad viene a los estudiantes a invitarlos a obtener una credencial para tener beneficios como descuentos en la compra de apuntes y otras cosas más. Por ese lado creo que está muy bien. También tenemos la posibilidad de conseguir un boleto estudiantil para pagar menos el viaje en bus. Otra de las cosas más interesantes es que a los mejores estudiantes, aquellos que logran aprobar una cantidad de materias en el año, pueden aspirar a una beca de estudios. Está pensada para aquellas personas que tienen problemas socio-económicos y quieren y desean seguir cursando la carrera que han elegido. Muchas personas vienen de lugares muy lejos y enfrentan problemas que deben ser tenidos en cuenta. Por ese lado, es una gran ayuda.
