As part of my ongoing Queens Beast series reviews, I give you the 4th coin to be released, the amazing Unicorn of Scotland.

The Queen’s Beasts bullion range takes its inspiration from the coats of arms of British royal houses. Receiving international acclaim from the bullion-collecting community, the coins in the range are available in gold, silver and platinum, and are also available in fractional sizes for entry-level investors.

At the coronation of Her Majesty The Queen in 1953, ten heraldic beasts stood guard. The Queen’s Beasts, sculpted by James Woodford RA for the coronation ceremony, symbolised the various strands of royal ancestry represented by the new queen. Each proud beast was inspired by the King’s Beasts of Henry VIII that still line the bridge over the moat at Hampton Court Palace. Today, The Queen’s Beasts can be found at the Canadian Museum of History in Quebec, while Portland stone replicas, also carved by James Woodford, watch over Kew Gardens in the United Kingdom.

The Queen's Beasts consists of a heraldic beast supporting a shield bearing a badge or arms of a family associated with the ancestry of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Queen's Beasts names are listed below:

  • The Lion of England

  • The Griffin of Edward III

  • The Red Dragon of Wales

  • The Unicorn of Scotland

  • The Black Bull of Clarence

  • The Yale of Beaufort

  • The Falcon of the Plantagenets

  • The While Lion of Mortimer

  • The White Greyhound of Richmond

  • The White Horse of Hanover

The 2018, 2oz, SCOTTISH UNICORN was the Royal Mints fourth in the series of 10 Beasts to be released. These amazing 2 ounce, pure Silver coins were reimagined and Beautifully designed by the Royal Mint Coin Designer Jody Clark. He also created the latest coinage portrait of The Queen which appears on all United Kingdom coinage. His bold interpretation of the Scottish Unicorn is the fourth coin to be released.
