Will trolls save the world? - WallStreetBets and the beginning of a new era
Can you feel something changing? It was subtlety growing for the last decade and half and, since then, more and more people have started noticing that things are not as they had always been.
We've yet to see it's form but it's massive and has been forming under the surface of awareness for a long time. As it begins to show itself, it shakes up anything and everything that hopes to cling to the old ways. It is a change in our beliefs and understanding about the world manifesting into new structures, new culture and new ways of interacting with each other.
The old systems are being uprooted.
A lot of people profess to know what it will look like, and some may have some insight, but who could have predicted these headlines? A bunch of redditors with names they can't even speak out on cable television are threatening the very existence of the biggest players on Wall Street.
While the old narratives may have you thinking everything is about left and right, and we think we are divided, we are anything but. We have just been too scared to really see one another and distracted from all we have in common. At moments like these we are reminded. As we realize we've been pit against each other, a new paradigm can begin to take form, one that makes old debates feel outdated.
We are just starting to feel the effects of children being raised by parents who grew up with the internet. The echoes of songs about peace and love in the 70’s and red pill blue pill talk and bands with names like Rage Against the Machine in the 90’s planted seeds and those seeds are finally beginning to grow into a beautiful garden.
I wonder how the masses view this GameStop fiasco. It seems to me that everyone but the hedge funds and their friends are pretty united, at least once you explain to them what the hedge funds were doing. “It might not be good to try and manipulate the price of a stock, but how have these hedge funds been getting away with this for so long? Why do we put up with this?” Sure there are a few who are still drinking the Kool aide, but as this whole event shows, if we can organize a large enough consensus, no entity or entities can monopolize power forever.
I never saw bitcoin as a solution to our problems but the biggest reason it excites me is that it started a whole new asset class that retail investors could get into before the institutional investors did. That has led to a massive redistribution of wealth. Add to that Tesla and all the other ways in which we see new players entering the game. The difference between these new players and the old ones is that they stand for something. It may not always be pretty and nice, and many are far from angels, but they are all sick of the old paradigm and want something better, and they are all moving away from centralization.
Many of the things that may seem to be the cause of our problems, may also be turned around and used in other ways. The algorithms that have us fighting against each other, what if they could be modified to fill us with energy and passion and appreciation for fellow humans without totally disregarding viewpoints outside of our own? Having our data at the fingertips of tech companies is uncomfortable, but what happens when decentralization forces the corrupt to show their hands?
I've been saying this for a while now, 2020 really wasn't all that bad from the grand scheme point of view. We were living life in an unsustainable way for a very very long time and seemed unwilling to wake up to that reality. Thanks to everything being shaken up a little, we may finally be ready to change something.
I do believe this community has a major part to play. I'm less concerned with becoming the biggest or the best, and more concerned with reaching the people who need us and who can add more fuel to this fire we've got going. I'm interested most in possibilities.
I believe that 2021 will surprise the hell out of us. It will be even wackier than 2020 but I mean that in the best possible way. Apathy and angst are merging and now trolling is becoming the most dynamic and effective form of protest and a force to change the world for the better.
A world we could have hardly imagined is just around the corner, and the best part is, we are building it together...memes and middle fingers and all.
