I know some people are really into buy and hold but for me, the figures I focus on is the annual return and the drawdown (or other matrices like VAR). In general, you want to increase your reward while decrease the drawdown. Drawdown is also a measure how comfortable are you while holding your asset to the end goal.

The reason why people love buy and hold is to avoid moment where you sell your asset but the asset spike up which if you miss few of these spikes, you will be getting outperformed. But you can do better by applying some simple momentum strategy.

E.G. if you hold 50% SPY and 50% TLT, this is already a relatively good portfolio as it gives you a good diversification benefit. But if you take out those 25% to momentum strategy (e.g. by holding only if P today > moving average of 200 and leave 25% buy and hold. It could further help you to ride the rollercoaster of the market cycle. This will also increase your probability of reaching your financial goal.
