Sewing is all about the basics, there's the basic bodice pattern, skirt pattern and sleeve pattern. From these, we can create new fashionable styles for outfits. I've decided not to do just basic anymore, if I make a dress, there's got to be something extra about it. It's just for a more sophisticated look. Basic is cool, I'm totally a basic chic but it gets boring sometimes you know.

I might as well make a series out of this tagged 'Trying New Outfit Patterns' or something of that sort. Some of the outfits might turn out too 'extra' for my personality but I don't mind. Extra is good and it's all in a bid to challenge myself to do better.

Today, I'm sharing this dress, it's called a tulip dress. The pattern was drafted using a basic dress pattern. It has a slit at the front to show some legs. I opted for a balloon sleeve gathered at the wrist instead of a basic sleeve.

Here's a quick rundown of how I made this dress.

Firstly, I cut all my patterns on brown paper and then transferred to the fabric

I then joined the front pieces of the skirt together

I turned and hemmed the neckline of the front and back top pieces and then joined top to skirt

Next, I sewed in a zip at the back and joined the dress at the sides

For the sleeves, I made a basic sleeve and inserted an elastic band at the wrist to gather it

I made a belt for it too

Some adjustments need to be made but here's what it looks like;

I really like how this dress is just a manipulation of a basic dress pattern and how inexpensive the fabric is. I spent about $4.00 total making this dress.
