Roentgen Discovers X-Rays on November 8, 1895.

On November 8, 1895, Roentgen found that shielding the tube with heavy black cardboard caused a platinobarium screen nine feet away to illuminate - too far away to be reacting to the cathode rays as he knew them. He discovered that the fluorescence was caused by invisible rays that pierced the opaque black paper wrapped around the Crookes tube he was using to analyze cathode rays (eventually recognized as electrons). Experiments found that this new sort of beam could pass through most substances, including the body's delicate tissues, yet could still see bones and metals. A film of his wife Bertha's hand, with her wedding band clearly visible, was one of his earliest photographic plates from his tests.

Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen

On Friday, November 8, 1895, Roentgen produced a film of his wife Bertha's hand with a ring, which was one of the first photographic plates from his tests.

As we commemorate this day, I hope that our knowledge and skills in the use of X-ray machines, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, and computed tomography scans will strengthen and enable us to better diagnose patient illnesses.

We can now use MRI, CT-SCAN, Ultrasound, and Digital X-ray machines as technology progresses.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the body creates comprehensive images of the inside of the body using a powerful magnetic field, radio waves, and a computer. It can be used to diagnose or track the progress of treatment for a number of chest, abdominal, and pelvic diseases. The doctor may utilize body MRI to carefully monitor your baby if you are pregnant.

A CT scan combines a sequence of X-ray images taken from various angles around your body with computer processing to create cross-sectional images (slices) of the bones, blood arteries, and soft tissues within your body. CT scan images contain more information than standard X-rays.

Diagnostic ultrasound, commonly known as sonography or diagnostic medical sonography, is an imaging technique that produces images of inside body structures using high-frequency sound waves. The images can aid in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of diseases and ailments.

The majority of ultrasound exams are performed with an ultrasound device outside of your body, while some need the placement of a device within your body.

An X-ray is a painless, rapid exam that creates images of the inside components of your body, notably your bones.

X-ray beams flow through your body, and depending on the density of the material they pass through, they are absorbed in varied amounts. On X-rays, dense materials like bone and metal appear white. Your lungs' air appears to be black. Fat and muscle appear as grayscale images.
