Late last night, during my sleepless feat, I came across a Twitter thread about the contemporary architecture of different parts of the world and possible factors that made them different, while comparing them to the uniformity of buildings worldwide. Image source In the olden days, people built their houses based on readily available materials and how much protection people needed from natural elements. It was a crude but somewhat understandable time as people lived without a lot of care.

While I have no qualms with the details of what I read, personally, I feel like the absence of a lot of virgin lands has also greatly affected the way we build homes now. It's a high rise or nothing. Using the least possible land to fulfil the most needs.

It's why I truly appreciate places like Plateau, Nigeria where there's so much vast land that there's no need for high-rise buildings. There's also the issue of hitting rocks on virgin land so buying a lot of land is more or less cheaper than putting up a single structure.

Now, we have Smart Homes around the world. These are, architecturally the same as our newly adopted buildings, but their functions are far from basic. Regardless of what part of the world you find yourself in, you'll have to pay through your teeth for these homes.

I've constantly had debates about these homes and how relevant they are with a lot of my architecture-inclined friends but for some reason, not many people value ease as much as I do. I see them as the beginning of the future.

As much as I appreciate the art and beauty that resided in ancient architecture. The beauty in their chaos. There's this thing about speaking to your very expensive home and having it do a lot of chores for you while you lazy about.

I believe in the coming years, just as we have modern architecture readily available in many parts of the world, Smart Homes will become way more common than they are right now. And I see this happening in less than 10 years.

The world is moving along the same trajectory, even the third-world countries that seem like they're holding development backwards are still feeling the heat of the new world and it shows in everything.
