Here's how I know you're poor

I've never really understood the concept of looking rich, acting rich and not having a dime. This might come off as judgemental, but I've found myself on several occasions asking questions when I see a person appear so wealthy. A lot of people are poor here.

On some occasions, a person could work with an oil company or a high-paying Federal parastatal, or be a political aide. However, you may not be able to tell the difference between a person who doesn't have a dime in their pocket from a person working in these places.

What makes this even harder to fathom is the fact that everyone has a snotty attitude; the rich and the poor alike. Everyone will treat you like garbage if you walk past their dump even by mistake.

Let me break this down a little.

Right now, I live in a city called Port Harcourt. I was born here, and even though my family doesn't live here anymore, I schooled here and live here in the meantime.

In my city, and this is something I've observed a lot from my years of being here, almost everyone looks rich. I'm talking about the most expensive phones, hairs, clothing, etc. You walk into a room and 3 out of 6 people are using an iPhone 12 or an iPhone 11 pro max and the likes wearing an expensive weave worth almost the same price as the phone or even more.

As a girl, I can't lie, it gets intimidating. I've felt and sometimes, I still feel intimidated. I can't afford these things, and even if right now I can afford these phones they use, I don't know how to gather all my resources to buy a single item.

So, in my head, I assume everyone who has this item can afford like three of them at a go because that's my financial rule at play always. I'm not getting anything unless I can afford it 3 times over. I work hard for my money, I can't lose it all that fast.

But this is rarely the case. I apologize for how judgemental this may sound, but the stories behind these ostentatious items are rarely stories you'd want to hear out loud.

And you might think I'm referring to just daylight prostitution, no. I'm talking about stories of spending all you have on a phone and not being able to afford a monthly subscription or the money to get your next meal. I'm talking outward classy, inward trash and by inward I don't mean their attitude, I mean their homes.

These days, asking the simple question - "what do you do for a living?" comes off as 'offensive', like how dare you???!!

Someone once told me, if I can tell you exactly what I do, teach you exactly what I do and you can't get similar or same results I'm getting by doing it, then something's off.

Yes, this entire article is me passing judgements, maybe. But it could also be me telling you who's just like me that: "a lot of people are lying". Focus on yourself and find peace.
