Recently, while having a conversation with my mom, I realized she has gotten to a tired point in her life where raising a child is the last thing she wants to do. A few months ago, I travelled home and met some kids in the house. One of them was a girl, the other 4 were males. I said hi and asked my mom who they were and she told me.

She told me there had been 2 girls and one just left to go live with my older brother and his family just before I came in. Then she mentioned how the second girl wanted to stay back but she wasn't ready to keep her.

My mother is currently in her mid-60s and my dad is approaching 70 later this year. They lived alone with no assistance. And we just got a dog, an added responsibility.

Whenever I travel I feel anxious because I know they'll be going through a lot and they call me too often coz they need my help.

So you might wonder why my mother would want to reject the help of a child when she needs it.

The problem is, my mother is tired of raising kids. She loves her 6 grandsons but she can't imagine keeping them for too long and going through the stress she went through with her 8 children all over again.

She has done her part.

I pushed and made efforts to get the child to stay back with my parents. And my mother warned that she would not involve herself in the extra needs of the child. I knew she was serious.

After speaking to my brother, we decided we would take up the responsibility and well, a responsibility we have taken.

I completed my part of the 25% of her fees I'm expected to pay and boy does it feel rewarding.

My mom sent some terrible pictures of her in her uniform and I felt good.
She's a 9-year-old who can't read. There's so much work to be done for her. She hasn't even been in a proper school her entire life.

I kept thinking this morning about her future and how awesome it would be for her to attend a university on my account and my brothers.

And my mom? Well, she's still not ready to handle the responsibility. However, her teacher instincts have been in constant play. She refuses to talk directly to the school but she calls me three times a day to make requests and make sure I speak to her teacher often.

Yeah, I guess I'm a mom now.
