Is mentorship more important or less important in 2023?

The idea of mentorship has always seemed quite vague to me. I know in every path I've chosen in my life so far I've found myself in positions where I've had to talk a person through the same processes I went through to achieve some form of success but I wonder how much good my talk has done for these people. During my days as a network marketer, I spent a lot of time teaching people what I do and showing them how I was able to build my network at the time. I didn't receive the same kind of attention from others but I found myself inclined to help people when they needed my help.

Similarly, during my most active days on Hive, I put in hours weekly into getting people started on Hive and answering questions they had about kicking off and making money.

I have to admit that in all the years I've spent teaching people how to do things, the year I dedicated to helping people earn on Hive had to be my most successful. I helped at least 10 people get off the ground on Hive and 3 of them began to earn way more than me and even teach me a lot of stuff along the way.

I once heard someone say that mentorship does more good for the mentor than the mentee. I don't know how true that is but a successful mentorship makes me feel super good about myself.

My recent mentee moment

I've spent a lot of time teaching that I almost forgot I need to be taught. While I've been fortunate to receive a lot of help along the way, there came a time when I needed help and I didn't even know what kind of help I needed.

Mentorship came to the rescue a few days ago, thanks to ADPList - a mentorship web application that matches mentors with mentees of the same field to help them grow.

I was able to share my portfolio with some industry experts who took a look at my portfolio and told me what more I needed to do to stand out so I could not only land a job but a really good one.

Last night, I got talking to a head of design at a British company who gave me a lot of tips that I never knew I even needed. Before him, I got to talk to a Nigerian Product Design lead who was kind enough to recommend me for a job at a company she once worked for.

I haven't seen a major result yet but I keep having that feeling like I'm almost there, you know. I haven't made the money yet but after these conversations, I can't help but get the feeling that I just need to do a few simple things and I'm sure as hell going to get the job I've always wanted.

Conclusion

I strongly feel like mentorship is going to be an active part of the future. The heart of the current job force isn't as strong as those of the past and the demands keep increasing.

While mentorship may not be particularly cheap and in some ways people may not understand how talking to someone for long hours can be of any benefit to them, I feel it's going to play a huge role in the job industry.
