Europe 2022 - response to Russian aggression, political failure, and a bleak future?
Dear Hiveans,
I already wrote
- 2 years ago specifically about Europe's dire situation (outlook_for_europe),
- last summer about problems with the international order (a_critical_assessment),
- and just one day before the start of Putin's war I wrote about Germany's predicament (short Germany).
Today we can say that the world and especially Europe are in a deep crisis. Europe is in an energy crisis, in a financial crisis, in a political crisis, and in an identity crisis. And the media ignore or trivialize the problems (youtube: 'deafening media silence' on global protests).
1. How did it come that far?
- Some people say that all of this is Putin's fault. And that's wrong, of course.
- Others say Europe should just have ignored Putin's war, and then Europe would not be in crisis. But that seems rather short-sighted to me. The moment a KGB agent took over the Kremlin (in 2000), this war was baked in the cake. And with "this war" I mean Russia's attempt to regain the western borders of the former Soviet Union (). Thus, no matter what the EU or NATO did, this war was always going to "happen".
- In my opinion this situation is the result of European short-term thinking (if thinking at all), Europe's dismal organizational structure, its refusal to make painful, but necessary structural reforms, and the incompetence of its staff of smug muttonheads.
2. What is the right response of Europe to Putin's war on Ukraine?
- I don't know. Nobody knows. Each and every policy option has its advantages and its risks.
- The (at least short-term) easiest option is doing nothing and accepting that a big country destroys and/or conquers a smaller neighbor. But if this is accepted, our rules-based international order is done, we are back to a pre-World War II world, and we accept barbarism. Plus, as the conquest of Ukraine is just one step in Russia's strategic goal, the direct confrontation between the EU and Russia is just postponed (remember appeasement).
- The other extreme would be to send soldiers to fight against Russia. This, obviously, has some big risks of escalation.
- A middle course would be a package of sanctions against Russia and arms deliveries to Ukraine (to enable it to defend itself effectively). By this measure, the EU tries to increase the costs to Russia and by that incentivize Putin to stop the war. But this course has its own risks, too. And we probably will be able to watch these risks unfold in the months to come.
3. What are the risks of the EU's actions?
- Energy:
- Germany and parts of the EU started its energy transition (wiki) aiming to shut down all nuclear power plants, to decarbonize (=no fossils) and to switch to renewable energy. In my opinion this policy has always been ideologically driven and detached from reality (physics).
- To bridge the gap from closing nuclear power plants, corrupt politicians such as Gerhard Schröder (bought by Putin and his cleptocrats) and highly naive ones such as Angela Merkel brought Germany in dependence on Russia. These decisions give Putin now the "power" (pun intended) to blackmail Germany. If Putin stops the flow of gas, Germany is utterly screwed. Its economy depends on gas and there is not enough short-term gas supply apart from Russia.
- As Germany has been the economic motor of Europe over the last 14 years, one can only imagine what would happen to Europe if Germany falls.
- As a lot of homes are heated with gas, it's possible that people will freeze next winter, which bears the risk of social unrest.
- The sanctions imposed by the EU are, of course, self-damaging, too. The question is who gets hit harder, the EU or Russia. Sanctions are a complicated subject and how they are done "right" is not topic of this post.
- Euro/USD: this year the Euro has dropped precipitously. If Europe gets a recession/depression, I'd expect this development to accelerate.
source - Demography: As written here, the demography of Germany and of Europe as a whole is very bad. There are too few millennials (born 1980-2000) who could push consumption and the economy forward, and to finance the pensions of the retirees. Very bad for the national budgets. This fact has been known for a long time, but no mitigating measures have been taken.
- Political crisis: if energy gets really scarce and the economy tanks, solidarity between countries fades. There's the old saying "Who do I call, if I want to call Europe?". The EU's political structure is complicated and it's difficult to come to decisions. Italy is already in crisis (source) and probably other countries will follow. Thus, exactly at the moment when cohesion is necessary, EU governments may drift apart. This is not new: Europe wasn't capable of acting when the Yugoslav Wars (1990s) broke out, when Syria broke down, and when Crimea was annexed. All this political failure is often accompanied by a pretension of moral superiority by EU "leaders". And I don't want to start with the sheer incompetence of Europe's politicians.
What will Europe look like 20 years from now?
- Again, I don't know.
- My guess:
- Europe will have less people than today (due in part to demography and in part to a renewed exodus to the US).
- Europe will have started fracking (at least 10 years too late) and building new and better nuclear power plants.
- France will be the premier power of Europe (best demography and energy situation).
- Hopefully, Europe's diversity/variety will become once again its strength. I hope it'll have open borders, a common market, certain common standards, but most important less political centralization (thus less dependency on politicians).
Overall I expect Europe to have some serious trouble in the years ahead, but these troubles will pale as compared to Russia or China. Nonetheless Europeans should brace themselves for tough times and they should "get their shit together".
What do you think? Am I a naysayer? Do you have pity on Europe? Do you think Europe deserves these problems? (How) Can this situation be repaired?
Have a great day, zuerich
Just some memes:
Liebe Hiver,
Was meint Ihr?
Have a nice day, zuerich
Nur ein paar Memes:
Queridos Hiveanos,
