When I saw this @rutablockchain initiative it caught my eye because I was causally writing a post for #leofinance about some shopping done with $hive, which I haven't posted yet, but I'll finish it.
Today we'll talk about hyperinflation in Venezuela and my experiences surviving it. 😅
In a hyperinflation your purchasing power becomes "nothing", it devalues every day if you don't protect yourself.
In Venezuela 🇻 we have been suffering it for years and to disguise it first they removed 3 zeros from our currency in 2007 from the Chavez government and then 5 more zeros in 2018 with Maduro. 😮😡 So in less than 20 years 8 zeros blew them off the map but that has not prevented our economy from being depressed.
Those who were advising them got their economics degrees on "soap boxes". (Only some Venezuelans will understand 🤭)
What is the hardest thing about living in hyperinflation?
That's a question for which I could say several different things, but actually, the worst thing for me has been to see how the money I produce becomes "salt in water".
In Venezuela 🇻🇪 we have had several moments of hyperinflation. I remember back in the 90's I had a grocery store, where I also offered lunches to take away.
Excellent business, which had been growing from 0, I had no money to invest but I wanted to do something that would allow me 2 things: 1) make money, obviously. 2) not leave my 4 year old daughter alone in someone else's care.
So I managed, bought powdered jelly and made several cups to sell at the nearby school, with the permission of the principal.
From that day on I began to offer gelatins and ice cream and then my father gave me a small room that I transformed into commercial premises. My first economic help I received from him, my dad. 🤗💞
He gave me the place for free, he helped me economically to transform it, he lent me to buy the first groceries, he gave me the initial of my first refrigerator and he also gave me free transportation when I went to buy the merchandise weekly.
Writing this post I realize that sometimes we take things for granted, but really at that time my dad's support was fundamental. Today I give him the honor he deserves. He is no longer on this plane, he now rests in the celestial homeland. 😔
Then I invented the lunches on demand. It was a success, this work. But then, 2 years later, the economy was a bit depressed, items were going up in price every week, profits were superfluous.... However, I didn't understand the economy 😣
So my decision was to close. I sold the goodwill and went into catalog sales and lingerie that Mom made. That helped me finish my degree in college.

Well, as I said before, the hardest thing about living in hyperinflation is to see that your daily effort does not have the reward you expect. On the contrary, you have to make a double effort, in order to earn a little more and get what you earn to cover your needs.
What have you learned from this situation?
From my first experience I learned that you have to know the market and how the economy moves to adapt along the way.
And now, in this current era, I have learned to:
- diversify income.
- learn about cryptocurrencies
- save in dollars.
- invest in goods, dry goods, whatever doesn't get damaged and appreciates in value every day.
What was the trigger for hyperinflation in your country?
Definitely, I think the trigger was mixing politics with economics and mainly to the "expropriation of private companies" and handing them over to neophyte people ignorant of how to make them produce and maintain them.
This produced a downturn in the productive process of the country, the closing of companies due to the unreliability that the economic system was giving, because no one invests to lose, and that was generating unemployment, low wages, shortages, etc..
From there was born the "bachaqueo". That was just the way the common citizen found to produce the sustenance of his home. Although that was like "hitting your family" since prices were rising every day more and more.....
What advice would you give to a foreigner who is about to start experiencing hyperinflation in his country?
I think the best advice is: BE PREPARED.
⏩ That you learn about cryptocurrencies if you haven't gotten into it yet. ⏩ That you start investing, in durable assets, like gold, cryptos. ⏩ That you diversify. There is a saying that goes, you can't keep your eggs in one nest, because an egg thief may come and take them away or an animal may come and eat them 😓 So it is with money, invest in businesses that you study well and put there part of what you have. ⏩ And this advice will seem very strange to you but I apply it:

En Venezuela 🇻🇪 llevamos años sufriéndola y para disimularla primero nos quitaron 3 ceros a la moneda en el 2007 del gobierno de Chavez y luego 5 ceros más en el 2018 con Maduro. 😮😡 O sea que en menos de 20 años 8 ceros los volaron del mapa pero eso no ha impedidos que nuestra economía este deprimida.
Quienes les asesoraban sacaron sus títulos de economía en "las cajas de jabón". (Solo algunos venezolanos entenderán 🤭)
¿Qué es lo más difícil de vivir en hiperinflación?
Es una pregunta para lo cual podría decir varias cosas diferentes, pero en realidad, lo peor para mí ha sido ver cómo el dinero que produzco se vuelve "sal en agua".
En Venezuela 🇻🇪 hemos tenido varios momentos de hiperinflación. Recuerdo por allá en los años 90 que tenía una Bodega de víveres, dónde además ofrecía almuerzos para llevar.
Excelente negocio, que había venido creciendo desde 0, yo no tenía dinero para invertir pero si ganas de hacer algo que me permitiera 2 cosas: 1) ganar dinero, obvio. 2) no dejar a mi hija de 4 años sola al cuidado de otra persona.
Así que me las ingenié, compré gelatina en polvo y fabriqué varios vasos para vender en la escuela cercana, con el permiso del director.
Desde ese día comencé a ofrecer gelatinas y helados y luego mi papá me cedió una pequeña habitación que transformé en local comercial. Mi primera ayuda económica la recibí de él, mi papá. 🤗💞
Me cedió el local gratis, me ayudó económicamente a transformarlo, me prestó para comprar los primeros víveres, me regaló la inicial de mi primera nevera y además me servía de transporte gratis cuando iba a comprar la mercancía semanalmente.
Escribiendo este post me doy cuenta que a veces damos las cosas por sentado, pero realmente en ese momento el apoyo de mi papá fue fundamental. Hoy le doy el honor que merece. Ya no está en este plano, ahora descansa en la patria celeste. 😔
Luego me inventé lo de los almuerzos por encargo. Fue un éxito este trabajo. Pero luego, 2 años después, la economía se deprimió un poco, los artículos subían de precio cada semana, las ganancias eran superfluas... Sin embargo, yo no entendía la economía 😣
Así que mi decisión fue cerrar. Vendí el fondo de comercio y me dediqué a las ventas por catálogo y lencería que fabricaba mamá. Eso me ayudó a terminar mi carrera en la universidad.

Bueno, como dije antes, lo más difícil de vivir en hiperinflación es ver que tú esfuerzo diario no tiene la recompensa que esperas. Todo lo contrario, debes hacer un esfuerzo doble, para percibir un poco más y te rinda lo que ganas para cubrir tus necesidades.
¿Qué has aprendido de esta situación?
De mi primera experiencia aprendí que debes conocer el mercado y cómo se mueve la economía para ir adaptándote en el camino.
Y ahora, en esta época actual, he aprendido a:
- diversificar ingresos.
- conocer las criptomonedas
- ahorrar en dólares.
- invertir en bienes, mercancia seca, lo que no se dañe y se valorice cada día.
¿Cuál fue el detonante de la hiperinflación en tu país?
Definitivamente, creo que el detonante fue mezclar la política con la economía y principalmente a la "expropiación de empresas privadas" y entregarlas en manos de personas neófitas e ignorantes de cómo hacerlas producir y mantenerlas.
Esto produjo un bajón en el proceso productivo del país, al cierre de empresas debido a la poca fiabilidad que estaba dando el sistema económico, porque nadie invierte para perder, y eso fue generando desempleo, bajos sueldos, desabastecimiento, etc.
De allí nació el "bachaqueo". Que solo fue la manera en que el ciudadano común encontró para producir el sustento de su hogar. Aunque eso fue como "pegarle a tu familia" ya que los precios fueron subiendo cada día más...
¿Qué consejo le darías a un extranjero que va a comenzar a vivir una hiperinflación en su país?
Creo que el mejor consejo es: PREPÁRATE.
⏩ Que aprendas de las criptomonedas si aún no has ingresado en ello ⏩ Que comiences a invertir, en bienes duraderos, como oro, cryptos. ⏩ Que diversifiquen. Hay un dicho que dice, no se pueden tener los huevos en un solo nido, pues puede venir un ladrón de huevos y llevárselos o un animal y comérselos 😓 Así mismo es con el dinero, invierte en negocios que tú estudies bien y coloca allí parte de lo que tienes. ⏩ Y este consejo les parecerá muy raro pero yo lo aplico:
aprende a compartir lo que tienes, dale a quien le haga falta. El ciclo de la vida te lo devolverá cuando menos lo esperes.
¿Cómo HIVE y Leofinance ayudan a personas que viven en hiperinflación?
Tanto $hive como $leo pertenecen al rango de las Cryptos y como tal están supeditadas a su revalorización constante, al menos en ello estamos trabajando. Son un tipo de inversión a corto, medio y largo plazo.
En la medida que entendamos este mundo de monedas virtuales y que lleguemos a vivir de ellas en una economía no dominada por un grupito, la vida será más tranquila y estable.
