It’s just anecdotal evidence of course, but over the last few weeks I’ve been noticing something I haven’t seen since March/April. Pretty much every time lately that I’ve been at a full-service grocery store (something on the scale of Cub here locally or a Target/Walmart size store, as opposed to something smaller like an Aldi) I’m seeing someone who’s seriously stocking up on non-perishable goods. No fresh produce or milk and eggs in their cart, just bulk quantities of non-perishables. Today in Walmart, a woman with several flats of canned soup, vegetables, and fruit, topped off with four mambo multi-packs of toilet paper. A few days ago at Costco, a guy with four 25-pound bags of rice, three 20-pound boxes of spaghetti, and five of the 3-liter bottles of olive oil. Yeah, maybe he owns a restaurant.

And I saw a recently uploaded YouTube video by a guy who’s not usually alarmist, suggesting that folks might want to stock up in case there’s so much civil unrest between Election Day and the inauguration that it might not be safe to leave your house. That’s eleven weeks. Is it that kind of thinking that’s leading people to stock up?
