Legends of Runeterra sees surprise nerfs in patch 1.5

The latest patch notes for Riot Games’ digital card game Legends of Runeterra are out. With this comes several major announcements for players. Not only will a new game mode release in the form of Labs, but the update will bring nerfs to two highly contentious cards. Let’s take a look at what all Riot will change in patch 1.5 of the Season of Fortune.

Legends of Runeterra‘s most notorious cards

It should come as no surprise that Riot Games is reevaluating Pilfered Goods and Solitary Monk. Both cards have seen consistent play since their respective releases, and they’re often a source of frustration for players on the wrong side of the board.

  • Cost increased from 2 to 3

Pilfered Goods’ basic mechanic is frustrating to play against but feels amazing to use. By increasing the casting cost of Pilfered Goods up to three, Riot hopes to decrease how often players see the card being cast in a game. This change also pushes back how quickly players can cast it for maximum value by a turn. Riot also warned that if the Nab mechanic continues to dominate the meta, additional changes may come in future patches.

  • Power decreased from 4 to 3

Elusive is a powerful mechanic that Runeterra typically balances out by giving it to relatively weaker creatures. Solitary Monk was the exception to that rule. Forcing the owner to return all other allies to its owner’s hand is less of a hindrance when paired with powerful enter-the-battlefield abilities. To help offset this, Riot downgraded Solitary Monk’s power to three. It’s also worth noting that this change puts Solitary Monk in range of the Culling Strike. Culling Strike can kill units with power three or less and is a fairly consistent removal spell.

An unexpected patch

Legends of Runeterra patch 1.5 seems a little unique this time around. Riot had previously stated that the next time cards would be evaluated would be late July or early August, during the release of patch 1.6. This upcoming patch is unique as Riot Games will be bringing a small number of new cards to the game. Because of the dominating presence of both cards on the meta, though, Riot had to step in and make those changes now.
