Un saluto a tutti,
il tema di cui vi vorrei parlare oggi è uno dei motivi che sta spingendo molti utenti a cercare alternative ai Social Media tradizionali: la censura dei contenuti o di interi canali.
Infatti una politica, forse scellerata, di autotutela di questi social media ha portato diversi autori ad essere censurati, allontanati o bannati da youtube, twitter, facebook.. per citare gli spazi più importanti.
La cosa più grave è la modalità utilizzata per il rispetto di queste politiche; infatti vi è l'oggettiva impossibilità di controllare manualmente tutti i centenuti visti i numeri imponenti di cui parliamo: centinaia di milioni di utenti che interagiscono giornalmente, se non anche miliardi come nel caso di Facebook, sono praticamente impossibili da tracciare manualmente da parte dei moderatori.
Tutto questo ha portato questi Social Media ad utilizzare l'Intelligenza Artificiale che, seguendo determinati algoritmi, segnala la presenza di utenti o contenuti che violano le politiche interne. Finchè parliamo di segnalazioni che poi vengono verificate dal personale addetto al controllo, direi che non ci sarebbe nulla di così sbagliato, in quanto l'utente registrandosi a questi Social Media accetta le politiche e le regole degli stessi.
Ma se i controlli attraverso l'AI avvengono in maniera totalmente automatica in tutte le fasi, che poi portano direttamente al "warning" e all'espulsione dell'utente senza che venga fatta alcuna verifica da parte di un addetto facente parte dello staff del Social Media, la questione si fa' assai più complicata.
E se pensate che il fenomeno riguardi un ristretto numero di utenti, forse dovreste farvi un giro su internet per rendervi conto della portata di questo fenomeno. Utenti che vengono bannati da youtube a causa di video che non fanno altro che mostrare la realtà di quello che succede in giro per il mondo: una sorta di bavaglio virtuale alla libertà di parola e al diritto di informazione. Oppure account Twitter di attivisti che vengono censurati in totale contrasto ai principi appena enunciati.
*Ma cosa succede se ad essere censurati sono utenti e canali che alla fine non hanno violato alcuna regola o politica aziendale ma che sono vittime di errori evidenti dell'Intelligenza Artificiale?
Clamoroso è l'esempio di un canale che seguivo giornalmente e che da qualche giorno è stato cancellato da Youtube proprio a causa di un evidente errore dell'AI, notizia che è rimbalzata su tutte le pagine dei quotidiani e dei siti di informazione online.
*"Radio Radio" è (o forse sarebbe meglio dire.. ERA) un canale youtube di taglio giornalistico che si occupava di pubblicare video riguardanti tematiche di denuncia e di sensibilizzazione sociale.
Un canale molto seguito che aveva le regolari concessioni ministeriali in tema di radio e televisione e in ogni caso era soggetto al controllo delle autorità delle comunicazioni italiane. *Quindi totale trasparenza e inclinazione al rispetto delle regole. Circostanza dimostrata anche dal fatto che Radio Radio fa parte di un gruppo che controlla diverse testate giornalistiche con una storia che supera i 40 anni senza aver mai ricevuto querele.
Un autentico record per una testata giornalistica italiana!
Eppure l'Intelligenza Artificiale di Youtube ha deciso che questo canale aveva ripetutamente violato le regole della community portando alla decisione della chiusura del canale, comunicata attraverso una email automatica.
Il motivo della decisione riguarda la “sicurezza dei minorenni” e nello specifico la mail mandata da Youtube recita:
“I video contenenti minorenni in situazioni allusive non verranno mai tollerati, Youtube non è un luogo per comportamenti predatori”
*Peccato però che il video a cui la mail fa riferimento non contenga nulla che possa portare ad un'accusa così pesante.
Peraltro un accusa simile era già stata imputata al canale "Radio Radio" anche se in quella circostanza la mail faceva riferimento alla “violazione delle norme della community sulle armi da fuoco”. Anche in quella circostanza l'accusa era riferita a un video che parlava di mascherine chirurgiche in periodo di coronavirus senza che le armi da fuoco fossero mai citate o prese in considerazione nello stesso.
Alla luce di tutto questo, la cosa sconvolgente è che tutto è avvenuto in maniera automatica in nome dell'automazione e della digitalizzazione del Social Media, a discapito però della risorsa più importante: *l'essere umano.
Inutile dire che la dirigenza di "Radio Radio" non starà certamente a guardare subendo una decisione ingiusta e infamante ed è pronta ad adire le vie legali; l’email è chiaramente una calunnia e l'accusa fa riferimento a quello che è a tutti gli effetti un reato penale sul quale dovrebbe essere l'autorità competente a decidere e non certo Youtube.
Qualora l'accusa fosse vera, cosa ovviamente non rispondente alla verità.
In ogni caso la dirigenza del canale ha compilato un ricorso tramite le modalità permesse da Youtube e sarà interessante vedere la reazione del Social Media: il canale sarà ripristinato oppure in difesa dell'AI e degli strani algoritmi secondo i quali essa funziona, la decisione di chiudere il canale sarà confermata?
In tutto questo è d'obbligo una profonda riflessione da parte di tutti noi, io perlomeno l'ho fatta giungendo alla conclusione che se vogliamo mantenere la nostra libertà individuale dovremo combattere e cercare delle alternative.
*Alternative che già esistono e devono solo essere diffuse con lo sforzo di tutti noi che già le conosciamo.

Proprio di questo abbiamo bisogno, perchè senza rendercene conto stiamo consegnando le chiavi dei servizio d'informazione a grossi gruppi aziendali, multinazionali che tramite il controllo delle notizie possono spingerci a determinate scelte oppure a determinati comportamenti. *Non è un pensiero fuori dagli schemi ma esattamente quello che sta succedendo sotto i nostri occhi!

The topic I would like to talk to you about today is one of the reasons that is driving many users to look for alternatives to traditional social media: censorship of content or entire channels.
In fact, a policy of self-protection of these social media has led several authors to be censored, removed or banned from youtube, twitter, facebook ... to mention the most important spaces.
The most serious thing is the modality used for the respect of these policies; in fact there is the objective impossibility to manually control all the centenitors given the huge numbers we are talking about: hundreds of millions of users who interact daily, if not billions as in the case of Facebook, are practically impossible to track manually by moderators.
All this has led these Social Media to use Artificial Intelligence that, following certain algorithms, signals the presence of users or content that violate internal policies. As long as we are talking about reports that are then verified by the control staff, I would say that there would be nothing so wrong, because the user by registering to these Social Media accepts the policies and rules of the same.
But if the controls through the AI occur in a totally automatic way at all stages, which then lead directly to the "warning" and the expulsion of the user without any verification by a member of the Social Media staff, the matter becomes much more complicated.
And if you think that the phenomenon concerns a small number of users, maybe you should take a tour on the Internet to realize the extent of this phenomenon. Users who are banned from youtube because of videos that do nothing but show the reality of what is happening around the world: a sort of virtual gag to freedom of speech and the right to information. Or Twitter accounts of activists who are censored in total contrast to the principles just stated.
*But what if the censored are users and channels that in the end have not violated any rules or company policy but are victims of obvious errors of Artificial Intelligence?
Clamorous is the example of a channel that I followed daily and that a few days ago was deleted from Youtube precisely because of an obvious AI error, news that has bounced on all the pages of newspapers and online news sites.
*"Radio Radio " is (or perhaps it would be better to say.. WAS) a youtube channel with a journalistic slant, which was responsible for publishing videos on issues of complaint and social awareness.
A very popular channel that had regular ministerial concessions on radio and television and in any case was subject to the control of the Italian communications authorities. *So total transparency and inclination to respect the rules. This is also demonstrated by the fact that Radio Radio is part of a group that controls several newspapers with a history of over 40 years without ever receiving complaints.
A real record for an Italian newspaper!
Yet Youtube's Artificial Intelligence decided that this channel had repeatedly violated the rules of the community leading to the decision to close the channel, communicated through an automatic email.
The reason for the decision concerns the "safety of minors" and specifically the email sent by Youtube reads:
"Videos containing minors in allusive situations will never be tolerated, Youtube is not a place for predatory behaviour ".
*Pity that the video to which the email refers contains nothing that could lead to such a hefty accusation.
Moreover, a similar accusation had already been made against the "Radio Radio " channel even though in that circumstance the email referred to "violation of the firearms community rules ". Also in that circumstance the accusation was referred to a video that talked about surgical masks during the period of coronavirus without firearms ever being mentioned or taken into account in the same.
In light of all this, the shocking thing is that everything happened automatically in the name of automation and digitization of social media, to the detriment of the most important resource: *the human being.
Needless to say, the management of "Radio Radio Radio" will certainly not stand by and watch while suffering an unfair and shameful decision and is ready to take legal action; the email is clearly a slander and the accusation refers to what is to all intents and purposes a criminal offence on which it should be the competent authority to decide and certainly not Youtube.
If the accusation is true, which is obviously not true.
In any case, the management of the channel has compiled an appeal using the methods allowed by Youtube and it will be interesting to see the reaction of the Social Media: * will the channel be restored or in defense of AI and the strange algorithms according to which it works, the decision to close the channel will be confirmed ?
In all of this, we all have to reflect deeply on this, and at least I have done so by coming to the conclusion that if we want to maintain our individual freedom we will have to fight and look for alternatives.
Alternatives that already exist and must only be spread with the effort of all of us who already know them.
