Criminal: tiny show for big experiment from Netflix

Experimentation.

The cinema is mostly entrusted to independent films where authors from all over the world, free from the "industrial" logic of big productions, are able to bring out important films that put at the center either history, or particular machine movements, or new genres or mixtures of different genres.

On TV for 10 years now the possibility to experiment is even more alive, especially thanks to the freedom of expression that is almost always guaranteed.

If TV has almost overcome the cinema, or at least reduced the gap, it is mainly thanks to this. Many young authors have paved the way, showing that with little could be said and packaged auteur products. Many began to follow this path, seeing in the television medium not as a place to recycle at the end of their career but as a place where they could express themselves without brakes.

Today the TV can express an infinity of products and even on the small screen have landed huge productions of tens of millions of dollars.

Netflix was perhaps the final turning point.

The experimentation here is at home.

In September 2019, Netflix is still a surprise.

It comes out on Criminal - UK screens, a miniseries in 3 episodes of 45 minutes.

What was Netflix's big move this time?

Double checkmate.

First, Criminal is actually set in one location. An interrogation room in a British police station.

So much for big productions, crazy sets, racing and amazing action. Everything is born and dies in that room. Police on one side, suspect on the other.

The spectator is catapulted into that room without knowing what crime is being investigated, what the evidence is, what the context is, who the suspect is and why he is.

We will find out little by little, immersing ourselves totally in the interrogation itself.

The second break with the past is that Netflix decided to create 4 series with the title "Criminal", all linked by the same concept but set in 4 different countries, all European. In fact, Spain, Germany and France are added to England in an incredible synergy that only increases curiosity without ever tiring the viewer.

It's obvious that for a series like this the dialogues and interpretations are everything or almost everything.

The luck is that the writing is at the highest level and the interpretations are pure, especially those of Hailey Hatwell and David Tennant.

Another great hit scored by Netflix in short, that with little can give a lot.

Al cinema è affidata per lo più ai film indipendenti dove gli autori di tutto il mondo, liberi dalle logiche "industriali" delle grandi produzioni, riescono a tirare fuori importanti film che mettono al centro vuoi la storia, vuoi particolari movimenti di macchina, vuoi nuovi generi o commistioni di generi differenti.

In tv oramai da 10 anni la possibilità di sperimentare è ancora più viva, soprattutto grazie alla libertà di espressione che viene quasi sempre garantita.

Se la tv ha quasi superato il cinema, o comunque ridotto il gap, è soprattutto grazie a questo. Tantissimo autori giovani hanno aperto la strada, dimostrando che con poco si poteva dire tanto e confezionare prodotti d'autore. In molti hanno iniziato a seguire questa strada vedendo nel mezzo televisivo non un posto dove riciclarsi a fine carriera ma come un luogo dove potersi esprimere senza freni.

Oggi la tv può esprimere un'infinità di prodotti ed anche sul piccolo schermo sono approdate grandissime produzioni da decine di milioni di dollari.

Netflix è stata forse il definitivo punto di svolta.

La sperimentazione qui è di casa.

Quale è stata la grande mossa di Netflix questa volta?

Doppio scacco matto.

In primis Criminal è ambientata di fatto in una sola location. Una stanza di interrogatori in una stazione della polizia britannica.

Addio grandi produzioni, scenografie pazzesche, corse e azione mirabolante. Tutto nasce e muore in quella stanza. Polizia da una parte, sospettato dall'altra.

Lo spettatore viene catapultato in quella stanza senza conoscere quale sia il crimine su cui si sta indagando, quali siano le prove, quale sia il contesto, chi sia il sospettato e perchè lo sia.

Lo scopriremo a poco a poco, immergendoci totalmente nell'interrogatorio stesso.

Il secondo punto di rottura col passato è che Netflix ha deciso di creare 4 serie col titolo "Criminal", tutte legate dallo stesso concept ma ambientate in 4 paesi diversi, tutti europei. All'Inghilterra si aggiungono infatti Spagna, Germania e Francia in una sinergia incredibile che non fa altro che aumentare la curiosità senza stancare mai lo spettatore.

Ovvio che per una serie del genere i dialoghi e le interpretazioni siano tutto o quasi.

La fortuna è che la scrittura è ai massimi livelli e le interpretazioni pure, in particolare quelle di Hailey Hatwell e David Tennant.

Un altro gran colpo messo a segno da Netflix insomma, che con poco riesce a regalare tanto.
