Everybody wants the unLockdown

In Italy there is an absurd debate about what is known as Phase 2. After a rigorous 50-day Lockdown, which has served to avert tens of thousands of deaths, it is time to slowly return to so-called "normality". As if normality could still exist. The surreal debate concerns the recent measures taken by Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte. Basically from May 4, 5 million workers will return to work, it will be possible to do physical activity outdoors and move a little more. Many activities will reopen only in June. Hence the out-of-control protest of restaurateurs, shopkeepers, hoteliers and other categories of workers. And so far the protest is understandable. Workers who are worried about their future and who fear they will never reopen their businesses or lose their jobs. The Kafkaesque thing is the behaviour of the political and information classes. Despite very good political management of the emergency at central level, there has been no cohesion in Italy. Many fronts and many free fighters in search of celebrities, very little sense of responsibility. And so began the hunt for the Prime Minister Conte, accused of being too vague, too paternalistic, too cautious and so on. And yet Conte based this choice on the principle of responsibility and on a dossier of the scientific community that had feared the premier an apocalyptic situation in case of "reopening" too wide and too fast in phase 2. There was talk of a scenario of 150000 people in intensive care by June. Just think that Italy has about 10,000 beds in intensive care. That would have been a disaster. Yet the evidence is there for all to see. Germany had reopened first. Today it's closing down because the contagions have started up again. France had announced a complete reopening, but then had to back out because the scientific evidence made them pull the handbrake. Ditto Spain.

And yet everyone wants to start again, so as not to starve to death.

Better, for them, to die of viruses and obviously on the front page of the newspaper.

In Italia si sta scatenando un assurdo dibattito sulla cosiddetta "Fase 2". Dopo un rigoroso Lockdown di 50 giorni, che è servito a scongiurare decine di migliaia di morti, è arrivato il momento di ritornare lentamente alla cosiddetta "normalità". Come se, poi, potrà ancora esistere una normalità. Il dibattito surreale riguarda i recenti provvedimenti presi dal premier Giuseppe Conte. Sostanzialmente da 4 maggio, 5 milioni di lavoratori torneranno a lavorare, sarà possibile fare attività fisica all'aperto e muoversi un pò di più. Molte attività riapriranno solo a Giugno. Di qui la protesta fuori controllo di ristoratori, commercianti,alberghieri e altre categorie di lavoratori. E fin qui la protesta è comprensibile. Lavoratori preoccupati per il loro futuro e che temono di non riaprire più le loro attività o di perdere il lavoro. La cosa kafkiana è il comportamento della classe politica e dell'informazione. Nonostante una gestione politica dell'emergenza molto buona a livello centrale, in Italia non c'è stata coesione alcuna. Molte fronte e molti battitori liberi in cerca di celebrità, pochissimo senso di responsabilità. E cosi è partita la caccia al premier Conte, accusato di essere troppo vago, troppo paternalista, troppo prudente e cosi via. Eppure Conte ha basato questa scelta sul principio di responsabilità e su un dossier della comunità scientifica che aveva paventato al premier una situazione apocalittica in caso di "riapertura" troppo ampia e veloce nella fase 2. Si parlava di uno scenario di 150000 persone in terapia intensiva entro giugno. Pensate che l'Italia ha circa 10000 posti letto in terapia intensiva. Sarebbe stato un disastro. Eppure le evidenze sono sotto gli occhi di tutti. La Germania aveva riaperto per prima. Oggi sta richiudendo poichè i contagi son ripartiti. La Francia aveva annunciato riapertura totale, ma poi ha dovuto fare marcia indietro perchè le evidenze scientifiche hanno spinto a tirare il freno a mano. La Spagna idem.

Eppure tutti vogliono ripartire, per non morire di fame.

Meglio, per loro, morire di virus e ovviamente sulla prima pagina del giornale.
